Thales and Alcatel have united to create a joint research lab dedicated to semiconductor technologies and targeting the telecoms, defense, space and security markets.
The lab, known as the Alcatel-Thales III-V Lab and employing 100 researchers, will be based at two sites in France and be managed by a consortium equally held by Thales and Alcatel.
One site will be at Marcoussis, within Alcatels French research center, and the other will be on the campus of the Polytechnique institute in Palaiseau, where Thales future research center will be located.
The main fields of research will be optoelectronic and microelectronic components for optical fibre transmission (InP HBT circuits, laser sources, modulators and photodetectors), GaN-based high-frequency, high-power transistors and circuits, infrared imaging photodetectors and high-power laser diodes.
