Hilarious Fake Cable Ad Censored in Canada
by Karl Bode 12:22PM Wednesday Sep 04 2013 Tipped by resa1983 See Profile
Some of you might recall this rather awesome ad (some NSFW language) that made the rounds this past Spring purporting to be the "first honest cable commercial." In the film, a fake cable industry representative (Nick Smith) promises poor service, underwhelming broadband speeds, and a "plethora of hidden fees," before educating viewers on the finer points of what being an oligopoly really means.

Click for full size
The film by Extremely Decent Films struck a nerve, and quickly netted millions of Internet views.

While the film is pretty clearly aimed at American cable companies (see the 0:24 mark), users in our forums and over at Reddit recently noted that the film has been banned in Canada.

Users trying to view the original video in Canada are greeted with a warning telling them that YouTube has pulled the video due to a defamation complaint from an unknown source. Re-uploads of the original video have yet to be similarly censored yet.

It's unclear who in Canada would file a defamation complaint (or why YouTube would listen) given this is a United States parody criticizing United States cable companies, none of which are specifically named. Still, Canadian defamation laws can be rather loose, and the video obviously hit too close to home for somebody.

Absolutely hilarious

An ad that takes aim at American cable companies, yet someone in our friendly neighbors to the north got butthurt about it and doesn't want their customers exposed to the exposé.

The video was generic and was about cable companies period whether in the US or not.

So then, being generic, how is that considered defamation by any rational person?

Re: Absolutely hilarious

It is completely ridiculous that it was blocked. Anyone that isn't a complete idiot knows about the games these companies play and how poorly consumers are treated, but it is relatively easy for them to get away with it when there is little to no competition.

Reupload comments hilarious

Pops up blocked due to defamation on Teksavvy Cable, Bell DSL, and Wind Mobile.

The reuploaded video's comments from Canada tel-co customers are hilarious:

Why would tecksavvy take it down? I don't think they would ever do something like that!

If they are a network reseller the block is further upstream probably.

They didn't.. I just confirmed via multiple Canadian ISPs that Youtube had blocked it for all of them.

This is the original video. I'm on TekSavvy and it's not blocked for me.

I doubt Teksavvy complained. I'd believe it more if it were Bell, Shaw, and/or Rogers. They seem to have a very bad reputation for whining when someone bashes them.

Nah - most likely Comcast complained. They are THE whiniest and most litigious company ever.

He speaks the truth.

If you live in a limited location you're forced to whatever speeds and services are available for whatever cost the provider wants. This doesn't extend to cable only.

I pay $50 a month for 3mbps DSL with fees out the wassu.

You've got to be kidding...

Saw this ad just last week via link in the CanChat forum so someone must have been busy over the long weekend.

As to who filed the complaint? I could hazard a guess but I wouldn't want to risk saying anything "defamatory" (AKA - Truth Hurts Don't It?) that might get me in trouble

Rogers are the only ones that are that stuck-up to remove videos that makes fun of them. Bell doesn't care.

You're assuming its a provider from Ontario. You do know there are other provinces, right?

Re: You've got to be kidding...

Ontario is one of the major provinces compared to other provinces, corporations functions larger in said places.

Though smaller cable companies in other provinces and rural areas might also be freaked out by this because they rely on misinformation to get cash from rural folks.

Plus in the Canadian ISP it's mostly a duopoly between Bell and Rogers, Bell owns the phone lines, Rogers with the cables.

Re: You've got to be kidding...

Bell was banned by MTS for 10 years. just recently that contract has run out so bell is back in business in Manitoba. MTS is making it very difficult for Bell to bounce off there cell towers lol. my family changed there cell phones over to Bell.. BIG MISTAKE! lol dropped call after dropped call, right in the city, no service on the outskirts or country side at all. I am going to stick with MTS until I can see something better come along. Rogers and Telus also crap non-existent service on the outskirts of the city or out of town. so for you to say that Bell and Rogers are the two main big honchos. they sure don't show it! with there crap service.

There was a post about it a few months back, but this censoring of it is fairly recent - about a month ago - right after it went viral.

Parody of a Bell AD

My guess is that Bell complained. The video uses music that I think I remember hearing in a Bell commercial and it uses colors that are similar to Bell's blue.

Look at the blue in this video:
