Broadband as a necessary utility
(old news - 09:51AM Thursday Jul 15 2004)
tags: business · cable
The New York Times (free registration required) this morning is running an article dubbed "Living the Broadband Life," outlining how high speed internet has changed people's lives. The gist of the article is that many people now consider broadband a "must-have" utility, that brings communications and information to their door. The article makes a brief mention that Time Warner will be bringing their 6Mbps, ($65 - $75 unbundled) service to San Diego.

I love bugmenot. If you're FireFox/Mozilla user, try the bugmenot extension for the browser.

If bugmenot and firefox were women...i'd marry them

I dunno about that last part but FireFox/Mozilla users should also get the Plain Text Links extension so you could immediately go to to bugmenot site without having to cut/paste the URL into the browser.

Where does it say sites should give away their content? Be glad all they want to know is who you are and that they don't charge (yet).

...so it doesn't matter.

Anyways, let us know when they roll this out to all users of this/these ISP(s). Otherwise, it's just a fat"pipe" dream. Everyone is "saying" we are trying/testing out xxxx type of x mbps service in a limited area. I want to know some time tables of when *WE* can actually see these bizzaro speeds, at realistic prices. Otherwise it's just smoke.

The Dichotomy of Broadband

On one side there are The Press and both major political parties pushing broadband as a Utility and a National Priority. On the other side, there are the broadband providers (as well as their apologists) who tend to default to broadband being some sort of luxury when the shit don't work in the manner advertised. Caught in the middle is the consumer.

There are certainly some folks making a lot of money from being able to have things both ways.

Yea, for all the talk about BB being important economically and culturally, we're essentially rolling out BB in this country the same way were rolling out Starbucks. No acknowledgment or policy that's says it's different and important. In 50-75 years, maybe there will be a Starbucks within walking distance of everyone. It'll take longer than that for ubiquitious BB. In the meantime, countries like China will be eating us for lunch economically.

Why can't I get to BugMeNot..com?

Anybody know why I can't seem to get into the BugMeNot.com site?

I've just installed the extension in Mozilla Firefox (to which I'm in the process of graduating from Netscape), can't get it to work and can't seem to find any further info. (I know about the info at roachfiend.com and bugmenot.mozdev.com.)
