Leichtman Research Group crunches the second quarter broadband numbers, and notes that the nineteen largest cable and telephone providers in the U.S. (accounting for 94% of the market) added 1.7 million net additional broadband customers.

As we've discussed, the traditionally slow second quarter was even slower than usual for broadband growth, which Pew Internet recently attributed to a slowdown in the market. As the low-hanging fruit (dial-up converts) gets picked, ISPs are focusing more on customer retention and bundle pricing battles.

Ironically Leichtman finds that the only major broadband provider to record significantly more net broadband additions in the second quarter year over year was Charter, who usually ranks dead last in customer satisfaction. Cable operators control 54% of the broadband market, with a 5.1 million subscriber edge over DSL providers.
