The Cablevision Sale Rumor Never Dies
Barron's Insists Sale is Ultimate end Game for Dolans
by Karl Bode Tuesday 08-Nov-2011 tags: business · bandwidth · cable · Cablevision
For as long as we can remember, there's at least two major telecom rumors that never seem to die -- yet never seem to occur. One is AT&T's supposed interest in acquiring either DirecTV or Dish Network. The other is the idea that the Dolan family is looking to offload Cablevision, the most likely suitors being Time Warner Cable or Comcast. That latter rumor resurfaced this week, with Boyar Asset Management boss Mark Boyar (who?) telling Barrons that "I think the Dolan's have positioned the company for a sale." There's not much evidence to support that a sale will happen, just some griping about the fact that Cablevision's earnings were a bit off last quarter, largely thanks to the fact that Cablevision enjoys fairly heavy penetration in existing markets.

Great...

Wonderful :/ A choice between ComCrap and TWC. If either comes to pass expect higher rates, usage caps and overall lousier service. I'll bet Verizon would be tickled pink to see it happen as it might drive more folks to FiOS.

Re: Great...

The Dolans are not stupid the reason why they want to do this is because they know Verizon FIOS will rule the day in NYC eventually, so its better to unload a company before it head to bankruptcy 5 years from now.

Time Warner Cable has no bandwidth caps so you better hope it's them instead of Comcap.

Higher rates and lousier service with Time Warner are likely, though - but you may see a boost in HD channels with Time Warner.

TWC should be smarter

I wish Cablevision or Verizon FIOS was in my area of Manhattan

By 2014, 97.5% of Manhattan should be covered with FIOS.. by 2015, 99% of NYC should be covered. You could still end up in the less thatn 1% not covered because of the building you live in... that's not to say that FIOS doesn't pass you right by anyway, so you might have to move to get it anyway if the building management decide to play hardball with Verizon -that could end up in the whole building not getting FIOS.

In the current climate (and assuming Obama gets re-elected) consolidation of telecom/cablecom is DOA for the foreseeable future. AT&T crossed a tripwire that put the DOJ's interest on telecom. That's not going to change for several years or new laws passed by congress. Note to lobbyists for telecom-- good luck on trying to change either quickly!

YEah right

The dolans will not sell cablevision. They are trying to make cablevision more and more of an internet only business.

IF one company was to buy cablevision i would think Verizon would be a serious contender. Imagine how much easier it would be to roll out fios if you all of a sudden gained cablevisions fiber optic network ?

Anyway I still do not think cablevision would sell. They have too much potential right now.

Bresnan

CV just bought Bresnan Communications and operates as Optimum West - would be interesting to go through yet another acquisition...

Maybe they will just create spinoffs

I know one spin-off would be a CATV security software entity where they licence downloadable conditional access technology to other MSO's. -> »www.lightreading.com/document.as···lr_cable

Perhaps another spin-off would be the sports holdings like MSG and all that.

I don't see them entirely going to one provider... just maybe broken up into seperate companies and maybe the multi channel service provider as you know today be sold... however I suspect there will be some form of Cablevision still in existence.

god it's 2011!!! I think by now all of NYC one of the biggest cities in the world should have Fios or other fiber connections. Look at South Korea and Japan even eastern europe countries used to be communist control 20 some years ago. way ahead of USA.

Yeah, okay.

No way will the Dolans sell Cablevision; the cash cow. People need to stop smoking the green stuff.
