The International Space Station Gets Internet Access
Next up: Minnesota!
by Karl Bode Monday 25-Jan-2010 tags: alternatives · bandwidth · world
NASA last week announced that astronauts aboard the International Space Station now officially have Internet access for personal use. Last mile fiber deployment was just a tad pricey and impractical, so the space station was connected to the tracking and data relay satellite network, which in turn is connected, via Ku-band satellite, to a broadband-enabled PC on the ground. Astronaut Timothy (TJ) Creamer has been using the new connection to tweet from space, answering user questions about the station (and his dining habits). Now that we've conquered delivering broadband to space, perhaps we can get to work on delivering broadband to places like Minnesota?

Re: Do they now get VOIP?

If they're also subscribing to a service like Vonage, I'll give them a call. Anyone know their phone number?

Also, if one of the ISS astronauts is busted for NASA's internet use policy (like no p0rn sites), I would hate to be the first astronaut to be immediately shown the door while still up there.

I guess that is the updated phrase.

I wonder...

since all the internet data gets filtered if they'll get caught surfing for pr0n and where you go for a little "alone time".

I wonder what their T&C's look like

I'll bet the terrestrial ISP leg caps & throttles worse than the satellite link.

You know what's 20 miles east of St Cloud?

All kinds of farmland where you can put a plane down in an emergency.

In the metro area you have Qwest DSL or Centurylink DSL (depending on your location), Comcast HSI, Nextera fixed wireless, and muni wifi run by USInternet.

You can get broadband in rural MN the same way they got broadband in space; point a dish at a satellite.

It's access to a PC which has access to the internet

From what I have read, this is not a connection to the internet. They have a VNC type of connection to view/control a PC in Houston, and that PC is connected to the internet.

Not sure how bad latency is when doing such work. Also, they do not have TDRS coverage 7/24, so there are periods where they don't have "live" access to that PC.

You can call them on ham radio. I've spoken to the ISS a couple of times and they also set up scheduled contacts (skeds) with schools.

Too bad. If they had true Internet access from the ISS, they could have tested the feasibility of using P2P software to transfer huge amounts of research data quickly and reliably.

I hope it's not the VNC. Many others work so much better in a poor bandwidth siltation. I thought they had actual laptops or something though.

Yes, this isn't really Broadband to the ISS. The PC at NASA has broadband, but the ISS has a data link to that PC that the story doesn't tell us what the real speed is.

Right now I am not sure who is worse.. AT&T or T/W and their constant rebooting of the Set top boxes saying they have a problem with the DVR's ---- Drat I told I do not have a DVR so why am I getting rebooted.. Cause they can. They want to share the outage evenly

Ummmmm... MN... Really?

Karl.. you smoking bong water again or something???

Um... MN actually has pretty damn good coverage compared to MANY places out there.. so, um, yea.. .Why you bringing up MN? How about CT,.. NH.... and others in the NE?

Comcast has HSI service in areas that you wouldn't even think people lived... 20 miles out of town, down unpaved dirt roads, there's peds in the middle of fields.. Qwest is pretty good.. there are microwave services here.. some Fiber farms... and yea.. in many rural areas..

Re: Ummmmm... MN... Really?

Um.. .Qwest is pretty good with coverage.. especially in MN.. when they wanted to get into LD service, they had to dramatically improve their reach with DSL before they could.. and they did.

And while some people do have issues with DSL service, I won't deny that, Qwest, of all the DSL providers out there, still comes out ahead over many others.

If you notice, the Qwest forum here is pretty quiet.. not many issues... not to mention, Qwest, ala US West, was the first major player in the DSL business.. they didn't mess around with their product like SW Bell, Verizon, SBC, Pacific Bell, etc. did. They supported their product as if it were a real network line, unlike the others who put many restrictions, port blocks, etc on the service.. if you needed something, they gave it to you.. their service, in my opinion, and experience with my customers and locations that I have it, Qwest has been one of the most, if not THE most, reliable connection.. I mean, 7 years with out any down time and rock solid connections/speeds is pretty damn good.

As far as them pushing out more services and in more areas.. yea, they lack.. but again, the very service that I'm boasting about was also their down fall.. US West put all their eggs in DSL back in the 90's and nothing into wireless.. becuase of that, they are suffering today.

But anyway..

I will agree, I have some friends with qwest and they all love the connection reliability. But they all hate the speeds qwest is offering. I do know that you can't build a CO everywhere, but I live in a high-population suburb of St.Paul, there's a million places qwest could put a CO to compete in our area with comcast. But they don't!

The place they build the CO is right where all the restaurants and schools are. The closest homes to the CO they built is only qualified for 1.5meg. The restaurants use them for their free wifi, but all the schools around use another isp (TIES if anybody knows of them).

So now comcast just has a free-ride in my neighborhood. They do a good job with that, but if qwest came in and competed with them, they could do better. And qwest has a ton of open land being sold to development to bring in a CO to come here, but they don't.

Thanks for baring with me!

What do you mean, US West (now Qwest) had pretty good CDMA (and even analog in some areas) wireless services across most of their metro/densely populated footprint. In 2003-2004 they just decided to let it go and sold it off to Sprint & Verizon.

Heh, could be tethered to a ground station on wheels, running along through fields, oceans and hitting an occasional mountain as the station orbits ahead, while the ground station uses cellular service to connect to the fixed towers.
