We've reached, or will reach the peak in the next month, according to geologists working at Shell. Once oil wells start dropping off in output, while India and China are starting an unprecidented ramp up of industrial oil use, economic law will dictate that prices rise exponentially until fewer and fewer people can afford to buy oil. This effect will work from the bottom of the economic scale, upwards.
As it is, this winter will see an epidemic of people freezing to death in the Northeast. CACD won't be able to provide enough oil to heat the homes of the poor. Many elderly have already turned their thermostats down to health-threatening levels. They will have to turn them down another 6ºF to cut usage enough to flatten the cost this year vs. last year--only trouble is, most thermostats don't go below 50ºF.

I would take the article more serious if they actually appeared to have technical knowledge on how the internet works. Any high school student could have researched the statistices on the internet and wrote a school assignment that says the same thing. Yippee! | |

Absolutely... Without knowledge of routing and system infrastructure, traffic flow analysis is worthless. That's why people who run flow models on networks can't be just statistical or network gurus, you have to know both well. If it wasn't for the draw of research, I'd probably being doing it.

So if we were to follow your analogy the internet my suffer ups and downs but it will always come back up. Further, it would be up quite a bit more often than not.
Which is where we are at today with the internet, we do occasionally have problems and slowdowns, but it bounces back.

| Sheesh... I really have to wonder who the hell is running IT at the places where these "researchers" and columnists work. Every month I'm reading some sort of doom and gloom about the huge spam problem, and how it's going to stop users from ever using e-mail.
I just checked the statistics for the domains I administer and, for the past month, we've outright rejected 65% of the e-mail received due to RBLs and related checks, and another 10% was identified as spam and properly tucked away into the user's junk box. Less than 1% was missed, and we had zero reported false positives. Oh, about 4% of massages had a virus or some sort of exploit inside, and were filtered and deleted. Since each client has a different, redundant anti-virus solution that runs on the desktop machine, I know that no infections got past the mail server.
It took me more time to log in and check these statistics than I spent on managing our anti-spam arsenal for the month.
My point is -- once you know how to block it, spam isn't a problem at all. Yeah, there's some bandwidth used, but that's basically zero marginal cost. Isn't the whole point behind computers that fact that they don't mind doing boring repetitive tasks 24 hrs a day?
Even scarier is I'm doing all this on a shoestring budget and still getting pretty good results. WTF are these big companies doing? | |

ISPs filter emails. Programs on a client filter viruses and spyware. We will continue to filter data to keep up with the propagation of data that we don't want. People communicating with computers on a network is not ever going to go away except for maybe something better. | |

| Just nonsense based on bad assumptions 25 years ago, a Cornell researcher said we would run out of oil about now. He reasoned that regardeless of the price of oil, no more could be recovered because it would take more than a barrel of oil to retrieve another barrel.
That researcher, and the finnish researcher, make one extremely bad assumption - there there would be no technological advances in the interrim. Retrieval of oil has advance significantly in the last 20 years; so to will spam and virus management.

I never got any spam either, my email inbox rarely has anyone but friends emailing me.

And that is the anonymous poster's point too. It's the other 90% you refer to that is the problem we all have to look at. It's great that we have some responsible home users and IT professionals here, but does that really make a difference when the other 90% (your number) is causing havoc either on purpose or by accident.

Companies usually have something called money. Money can be used to buy more bandwidth, servers, and routers. Its just expansion. Most of these companies are willing to fight spam. I dont see how spam could ever take over when most people don't even want it in the first place. Usually the reason something is popular is because a lot of people like it. Unless a bunch of people start liking spam its never gonna be a big deal. I just dont think that spam will ever be more of a problem than it is now. I dont even consider it a problem now. Its just something you have to adapt to. | |
