The Real Life Victims of Spam
Scam nets huge profits, victims prefer anonymity
by Karl Bode Monday 29-Apr-2002 tags: legal · business · spam
A popular scam known as the "Nigerian Letter Scam" has made the rounds via snail mail, faxes and now e-mail, and has been around for a very long time in one form or another. That hasn't hindered its success, with Newsbytes telling the tale of one entrepreneur who recently lost $750,000 to it. Spam has brought new life to age-old scams that have always been following the same underlying theme: attempt to convince the targets that they've stumbled into an unbelievable opportunity.

Being dumb and greedy is a bad combination on the

This scam is so old and so played out, if you fall for it now it's because of greed and/orstupidity.

When people tell me I'm being cynical, I keep guys like this in mind. (And the people at faith healing conventions)

Cynicism keeps me from being taken for a ride. Thanks.

Re: Generally....

i must have gotten 3 or 4 of these faxed to me and yes i did do business in nigeria. anyone who paid anything to anyone because of this fax must be an idiot.

if you do business in nigeria you get the money up front so no one would owe you any money anyway. then on top of this, if anyone was sending you money it would be the company that you did business with not someone purporting to be the Nigerian government and of course they would be telling you how much they sent, when they sent it etc, not asking you for payment to collect.

There is a difference...

...between being cynical, and being able to use common sense.

But using either one would have saved that guy 750 grand.

How do people this stupid get 750,000 in the first place? For that matter how do they keep from getting killed in daily life? I just hope they dont breed.

Re: There is a difference...

I wish I had a non-breeding relative who was married to this guy. If I inherited any remaining money, I could at least put the money to good use. For example, I know of some really good broadband and computer deals coming out of Nevada (or is it Texas or Washington?).

But on second thought, this guy who lost the $750,000 was probably the one who bought all of those great Worldcore Online computers, leaving us poor DSL Reports readers stuck with the 'sorry, sold out' messages...

By simple definition, roughly 50% of all people have less than average intelligence. I once saw a billboard that said, "40% of all incarcerated prisoners did NOT graduate high school". THAT moron never put 2 and 2 together to realize that he just stated that kids that drop out have a better chance (60% of all prisoners HAVE their diplomas) of staying out of prison!

P.T. Barnum was right... There is a sucker born EVERY DAY!

not to mention greed...

Every one of those Nigerian emails I've gotten, and the Nigerian faxes that went before it, appealed to one thing... GREED. Wanting more money isn't a bad thing unless you nix your morals along the way, and that's when it turns to greed.

In almost every case I've seen it's obvious that part of the scam is that someone's doing something illegal, or that something illegal has to be done to get the money. You know, like "we scammed this off of the people and now the new government is after us" or "we just need to pay some 'bribes' and we can get the money" etc.

Part of the charm of this scam, like many others, is that victims usually don't talk because they know they got taken trying to do something wrong.

I must get 5 of these things a week, sometimes more. I remember getting handwritten letters from Nirgeria in small brown envelopes as well.

Any group that would have me for a member...

Who was it that made that comment, Groucho Marx or W.C. Fields?

Anyway, my first reaction when I received a similar email was: You've got $25 million and you want MY help? I'm the BEST that you can do? There's GOTTA be something wrong here!

Of course, there was. I get some variation on the theme maybe once a month. It's simply amazing that people fall for it. Even more amazing that they'd get $750,000 into it before smelling a skunk.

Called 419 Fraud

Called 419 after the section of the Nigerian legal code that allows (and the Nigerian government seems to encourage) this kind of activity.

What I want to know is...

Who are the Royal Canadian Provincial Police? Some new hybrid of the RCMP and OPP? Nice work by the author on that one.

No surprise to me

I had been receiving snail mail from these crooks for many years, and I even saved some up to present to the Secret Service. The agent was very friendly and knowledgable about this, and went so far as to say that ALL business in Nigeria is crooked in some way. The Nigerian government is the most blatantly corrupt and dishonest government in the world.

Snail Mail, Fax, then e-mail. I now get at least five or six of these every single day. I dutifully forward them to the appropriate ISP, such as hotmail, msn, aol, etc., to have that user's account yanked, but of course, as soon as they send the e-mail they stop using that account anyway. (Some of them even spoof hotmail addresses).

Until the Nigerians elect (!) an honest government, this will go on forever. This guy wasn't the only one to lose 750 grand. There are other people just as stupid as he.

Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud

Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud is nothing new - it has been happening for quite some time now and has recently migrated to the Internet. Nigerian scam artists have now learned how to use spam and decided to broaden their target "market". Originally however AFF got its start in the snail mail and fax world.

The Department Of State published a pamphlet on this problem in April 1997. It is available online as a PDF file here.

A Google Search for sites covering Nigerian AFF is available here.

Anyone who gets an unsolicited "Confidential Business Proposal" from anyone claiming to be from Nigeria - hell, from anyone anywhere in West or Southern Africa - better have a large degree of skepticism, if not outright incredulity, about the validity of the "proposal".

I mean really, just how often does someone offer you a chance at 25-40% of $40,000,000 just for making your bank account available?

I got one of these in a prior ISPs inbox late last year. I closed my account right there and then, and didn't bother to respond.

A fool and their money

You know what they say about a fool and their money?. I say greed and stupidity are a BAD mix. I guess this is what Darwin meant about survival of the fittest?

There is more stupidity than hydrogen in the universe, and it has a longer shelf life.

Taking matters into the public's own hand

A collective effort would be easy enough to completely squash the 419 scam.

The thing to do would be to have everyone respond with bogus information. They would be working overtime sifting through the crap. Imagine having to look through ten thousand bank accounts numbers with the likelihood of any one of them being valid as next to nothing. It would throw up red flags at all the banks and point straight at the nigerians doing it.

There is a web site where this guy responds to spam and tries to jack with them and string them along... He really laid it on thick with one nigerian scam artist - »www.thespamletters.com/

Re: Taking matters into the public's own hand

A collective effort would stop a great deal of crap in this country and others.

The problem is that few have the nads to do it. They'll sit around an complain, but never step up to the plate.

The world has become overpopulated with spineless lemmings, and that folks is the root of the problem.
