The Return of $15 Verizon DSL
Reduces intro DSL price, again...
by oliphant Wednesday 10-May-2006 tags: dsl · prices
Last year Verizon began offering 768kbps/128kbps DSL for $14.95 for twelve months. Customer response was so popular, Verizon had trouble filling orders, so they bumped the price up to $17.95 in April. Those supply kinks have been worked out apparently, and the Verizon Website notes that the company has dropped the price of the introductory package back to $14.95. The lower price was a large reason the telco added 613,000 DSL customers in the fourth quarter of last year.

It's all getting cheaper

There was an ad for SBC's DSL at 14.95 as well if you took a year contract.

Try $12.95. I wonder if $9.95 is next?

That would really knock Netzero and Netscape dialup off the map.

Re: It's all getting cheaper

AT&Ts offer is $12.95 for 1536/384 and you get an unlimited nationwide dialup account you can use at the same time while travelling or whatever. So basically compared to those dialup providers you get DSL for $3 more and still have the dialup if you need it.

they can lower it to $4.95/mo - i'll still keep my faster cable because I don't need a damn phone line. Strip the phone service requirement and they'll see a lot more people sign up.

Check with your phone company, many now offer "dry line" DSL.

I have comcast where I live, and DSL at my mom's.

Now think about this... what do I do that I need a 6 Mbit pipeline to my house... Ummm nothing really. I have a Citrix server that in reality all i uses is 10-15K for traffic, I got tired of downloading crap that I didn't need... I just have the cable because of the static IP addr & because it's bundled with my TV package... and that's about it.

The DSL bill is 15 bucks a month (+ tax) and vonage is 25 bucks... so we're looking at 40 dollars for phone and net access (yes, Verizon does offer nakednaked DSL in PA).

RCN the cable company where my mom is located charges $56 a month for a cable modem.

To my surprise, the so called 7 megabit connection that RCN provides appeared to slow and not very responsive... While the DSL was a lot more responsive.

My days of pulling out flukes and doing network traces are over. Now I go for affordable. And that's the bottom line!

verizon dsl price drop

I am glad to see it at that, with Verizon's $45/mo unlimited calls and this it is same price as comcast or charter's $30/$30 plan for voice/data. Of course the speeds are lower but some don't want to switch to comcast.

Lets see what happens when their contracts are up!

I bet there will just as quickly be a mass exodus AWAY from VZ and the other LEC's as soon as these initial customers 1st year "premium" pricing comes to an end. I would bet that 99% of the people that switched did it for the "low" price. I would also bet that 99% of these people are going to CLOG the hell out of the customer service lines when that $14.95 price shoots up to $30+!!!

Doubtful, 30 dollars is a hell of lot cheaper than 55 and most won't notice any difference in speed.

Re: Lets see what happens when their contracts are up!

I jumped ship to $14.95 the first week. Got up and running in a week or so. Honestly other than some large 2 meg pictures posted here in the digital imaging forum I see no slowness. The VZ newsgroups are not capped at dial up speed like OOL either. I was one of those lucky OOL customers who got 1meg speeds instead of the 5 or 7 megs advertized.

I will get FIOS the first week it is available and switch my two phone lines to VOIP. Save $70 on the phone bill and up my internet charge from $15 to $35 is not a bad deal.

Certainly they considered this to...$15 DSL is the gateway drug to their other services.

There is no question that it was a brilliant piece of marketing! In fact, one of the better marketing moves I have seen in a long while.

Wishful thinking cable-boy, but as 99% of sensible people know, you simply call at the end of your contract and renew. This isnt like the cable co's $99 triple plays that shoot up to $150 after the contract is up.

I just actually upgraded my AT&T DSL to their Elite. $27 a month for 6Mbps down and 610k UP . Terrific.

Re: Lets see what happens when their contracts are up!

Exactly...despite claims of new subs only, history has been retention agents will let people renew. It's cheaper than letting them cancel. Also current subs have been able to downgrade to this new plan (my neighbor did it) so new subs only isn't exactly cast in stone.

I downgraded my service to $14.95, and they did it happily with no questions asked.

Thats pretty sweet. 24 month (two years for those who cant count) contract with Verizon for residential DSL (NOT!). Thanks for the laugh "italian926"! I will never sign any contracts for a residential class service, but its good to know you will! You are just the type of sucker they are looking for.

I have been on DSL for 6 years now, switched over from cable and never going back, and the price has gone down every year, and that is for their top speed packages.
year price speed
1st $60 3000/256
2nd $55 3000/384
3rd $50 3000/384
4th $47 6016/608
5th $44 6016/608
6th $27 6016/768

I bet you cant say that about cable, in fact reverse those numbers

Re: Lets see what happens when their contracts are up!

Kudos to AT&T and Verizon for offering low cost broadband. As an IT professional I advise many people on Internet services. Most people who are not Internet nerds can’t tell the difference between 768 or 10mbps, so I can’t ethically advise them to spend more money for something they won’t use. One thing is for sure they can tell the difference between $15 and $49 per month. Of the dozens of people I convinced to give up cable, not one regretted it or went back.

Right. Not looking for the uber-user with a 768 dsl, but to steal from dial-up, and get a foot in the door for a basic broadband sub.

You mean 6Mbps down and 610 up.

And he is somewhat right. Some people depending on their finances and their ability to read a contract will leave Verizon. Others who are too dumb to realize their financial situation will just stay with Vz until Vz kicks them off the network due to no payment. I live in an area where is this is likely to happen.

All these low-mid income people switch in mass droves to Vz because its cheaper and due to lack of understanding/reading a contract they get screwed when the price is jacked up. Verizon counts on people switching from the slow ass 768 (which at 15 is not a deal imo) 5 bucks would be more of a deal. 768 is faster than dial up granted, but in terms of broadband that is slow as a turtle and when you compare apples to apples the price of 15 bucks is robbery. You can't compare dial up to broadband and the pricing. People who do so are idiots. They are completely different entities. While they both connect you to the net the way in which they do it is different. Also note Verizon's Tech support is probably outsourced = crappy. Granted I'm not a Verizon customer so I can't really vouch for it, but from what I've heard from other people its not that hot.

But I do have to say I'm laughing because most people getting into the broadband market have no clue how to use a PC in the first place. Let alone how to run a home network..which means Verizon will A)Give retarded advice, or B)Point them in other directions and tell customers home networks aren't supported. I'm apt to believe the latter.

a. Dry loop can be had from Verizon for 19.95 (768/128)
b. price does not go up if you commit to another year.
c. If they are too dumb to read the contract it not verizon or any other companies fault.

2 things stop me

2 things stop me from jumping on this band wagon. One is the fact that although I'm only 6,000+ feet from CO/Telco/ ATM, I couldn't any better than a 1.5/384 speed a few months ago when I tried the deal they had going at the time ($29.95 for 3/768). 2nd thing is the fact that Verizon can't tell me over the phone if I'm able to get any better than that as of now. Not going to bother with signing up, waiting for online date, then cancelling and returning their crap!
