The Virtual Reality Network That's Virtual
As in, many think the project's a hoax
(old news - 11:03AM Tuesday Jan 02 2007)
tags: networking · Oddities
The International Association of Virtual Reality Technologies, or IAVRT, recently announced that a new network was being formed specifically for the purpose of virtual reality. Dubbed the "Neuronet," the global network would be independent from the Internet and would utilize the Virtual Reality Over Neuronet Protocol (VRONP), according to the product website. The company will apparently sell domain names on the new network to "offset the considerable costs associated with the creation of the network," one of the project's planners tells CNET.

The only problem is that the entire organization consists of two web developers in Vancouver and little more. Struck by the painful lack of technical or financial specifics on the project's website, several bloggers dug into the idea and found the organization is really just the website -- created a whole month or so ago. It raises the question of whether the project is a hoax, a film viral marketing campaign or just plain old lame.

It sounds like a scam. I mean really now Virtual Reality Over Neuronet Protocol. It even sounds made up.

I don't smell Vaporware but I do smell something else, the feces of a bull comes to mind among other things.

I smell porn. Anything like that would probably be a huge deal to the porn industry but I don't think they would say their behind the project.

Or it's vaporware.

Re: I smell

Amusingly, the VRONP acronym can also be shuffled around to say VPORN or VPRON.

Wow

This shows anyone can believe anything that goes on the net.

'Gotta start somewhere...

10 years ago some Venture Capital Fund would've called this a "business plan" -- and shoved $10 million at it. Who's to say they won't get funded, rent a series of national fiber "lambda's", some carrier hotel cages -- and wa-la!

And that's just on page 1.

Hmmm, wonder if these two know about each other?
Of course if it's a scam, why care?

Skynet?

Would this be the predecessor to Skynet? If so, we might expect Sarah Connor to show up sometime soon.

Or Maybe...

Naw, this all legit. These guys are the ones who developed the OS for the Phantom online gaming system, they just decided to upgrade the entire project. I have it on good authority that each unit shipped will come with your choice of either a red pill or a blue one (depending on your bandwidth needs)...*giggle*
