Nintendo shows off the Wii's non-game fuctions
(old news - 10:44AM Saturday Sep 30 2006)
tags: hardware · gaming · content
At the Tokyo game show in Japan this week, Nintendo demonstrated the on-line functionality of their upcoming Wii broadband game console in more detail. This demonstration explores the idea more fully, showing off image editing, weather forecasts, the Wii menu, and browsing in more detail. Broadband is an integral part of the company's latest console, which will also offer users the ability to download games from Nintendo's back catalog. The Wii ships on November 19 for $249.99.

Looks Cool

It does look cool. But, If you want to surf the web. You still need that keyboard.

Can someone invent a replacement for the good ole keyboard?

Re: Looks Cool

My son won't stop talking about the Wii. Most of his friends are more in to the computer than consoles, but they love super smash brothers and zelda. I can afford the Wii for christmas for him, no way can I fork out the cash for a PS3. They are really in to Guild Wars and Half-Life 2. The new consoles offer nothing better than what they get on the computer, but the Wii offers some new ways to play and get in to a game.
We also have a PSP and 2 DS-Lites. The PSP collects dust while the DS's get used non-stop. The PSP has way better graphics but the games on the DS just draw them in and keep them playing. After seeing how well the DS has done(i was skeptical at first) I think Nintendo is on to something by getting back to concentrating on game play.

I believe they will offer a keyboard option similar to what the Xbox 360 sells for their system.

Microsoft doesn't sell a keyboard specifically for their system.

Wii or not wee

My daughter and most of her friends are saying the PS3 is the way to go. Supposedly none of them are liking the Wii hype. There are a few xbox lovers, but they are the ones more into death and destruction and say that only xbox has that genre in sufficient quantities.

Your acquaintances may vary.

No thanks, XBOX 1 was my last console. It does look cool but in a few years they will probably develop it for computers.

They won't be able to get one most likely. Only 400,000 machines are slated for North America this year. And they're going at a rate of around $500 for the base system and $600 for the premium system.

Bleh. hehe.

Oh boy! A major broadband console![/sarcasm]

Us 56Kers just keep getting pushed aside more and more with each passing week....it sickens me.

I like the Nintendo Wii quite a bit, but I doubt I'll be able to participate in it's online activities much...curse you 56K! Oh, wait, too late....

Re: Wii or not wee

We have BB, but the console is not connected. So to me that is a waste. The important part is the game play and graphics of the PS2, that is what the kids here like and think the PS3 will have more of.

Re: Wii or not wee

The PSP has better graphics than the DS Lite, which hasn't done the PSP much good.

I have zero interest in same-same XBOX and PS consoles, but I'm seriously considering picking up a Wii.

Are you living under a rock? Seriously, get broadband. It is quite cheap in most areas.

No, I am not living under a rock, but it is quite obvious that you are. You fail to realize that DSL, cable, and fiber do not span the entire country.

And don't even think about mentioning "well you should move then". I'm sorry, I enjoy this little place in the country that I have grown to immensely like over 14 years, I call it "home".

Please, don't et me started.

Actually 400,000 are slated for the November release. They will have 2 million PS3s out by the end of the year. That's still half of what they originally announced, but it's much better than the Xbox 360 release.

more than likely you wont get one(PS3) unless you fork out 3000 bucks on ebay and if you dont have newer model HDTV its no point

I'm getting a Wii keep it for 2 years by that time PS3 and Xbox 360 should be at a reasonable price thats when I'll get one of them also by that time you'll know who's really winning the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD war

Re: Wii or not wee

I see you increased your ebay bid. Actually, I guess it all depends on what you want. Most kids around here compared the games and then looked at the hardware. PS3 is what most of them liked.

Tell you what. If they don't you can look me up in BBR and rub it in my face that they didn't make their projections. Until then unless you can see into the future you're just blowing wind past your teeth.

guess nobody told them that most of the "wow, that's amazing" games are coming out on the 360 as a multiplatform release.

also, looking at the specs, yea, that doesn't tell allot about the system other then it has a CPU GPU and RAM, it's all about the coding enviroment, which sony has never had.

PS3 being the way to go?...well, I'll have mine on November 19th, and it's staying in my closet until the 2nd week of December when it goes up for auction

How sweet will it be to be able to play Super Mario Kart, Mariokart 64, Mariokart Double Dash all on the same system? Oh boy!

Wii

You can use the Wii with a 56k connection for basic play and game downloads. Thats not too big of a deal. Go on ebay, pick up a router that has dial up modem built in for about$15-$20, the router will do the dialing, and then all your computers/game counsols will connect to the router via standard ethernet. It will of cource be only dial up speeds, and your game downloads will be slow, again, at dial up speeds, but it will still only take about 30 seconds to download a classic NES game, since their between 100 and 400 killobytes in size, about 3-5 minutes for a NES game, at a few megs in size.

N64 may be a problem, as those games range from 20-190 megabytes in size, but still dooable. You can also still browse the net, and email during the time the Wii is downloading, as the router will split your dial up into multuple ethernet connections.

I did this when I first got Phantasy star onle. I got the Broadband adaptor, and already had a dial up router. I did this because I didnt want to have to purchase a BBA once I got high speed.

@bell.ca

very impressive

I see many of you have your doubts, but it's for naught. As for the keyboard, when u wish to type in a text box a keyboard appears on screen. In my eyes, I see a very impressive interface. If you have any more questions feel free to ask, I know an awful lot about the Wii, more than the average person at least. As for your daughter, perhaps the "kiddy" label that people placed on the Gamecube left a bitter taste in her mouth and she has herself stuck in a certain mind set. She probably knows nothing more about it than the name.

what it's the best controller ever look at how easy it is to play madden on the Wii. This is just running with the ball. Sooooo much simpler than using an XBOX or Playstation contoller.

Madden is really all I play, and the last thing I wanna have to do is make a throwing motion everytime I pass, kick, run, etc.

yeah I know I was being sarcastic. actualy the Wii grpahics engine in Madden is the SAME as it is in the XBOX, Game Cube and PS2 versions. Also no online play and they nmber of offensive and defensive plays you can actualy do it cut serverly because they would be too hard to access in the time need because of the complexities of the Wii controller.

So same grpahics, less plays, no online play, complicated movements and this is supposed to be some kind of ADVANCEMENT and supposed to be FUN? Um no thanks.

Well said.

I had no idea the graphics were the same as ps2, that sucks. PS3 here I come (when the price drops).
