TiVo Lets You Watch YouTube on your TV
Online video and television viewing are starting to merge
A trend is taking place in the world of video. Consumers want to see a seamless merging of their online video experience and their television viewing. We are one step closer to that merger since TiVo has just announced a partnership with YouTube.
quote:
"TiVo’s strategy is to bridge the gap between Web video and television and make as much content available as possible for our subscribers,” said Tara Maitra, the vice president and general manager for content services at TiVo."
TiVo will be adding a YouTube video section to its customer’s selections before the end of the year so that they can opt to watch web videos on their TV sets. The service, which is similar to the newest version of Apple TV, will only be available to those TiVo users who have both a broadband connection and up-to-date hardware.

Hummm...

Many PVR (personal video recorders) already have this feature.
Is Tivo watching these other free/low cost PVR developers?

Which PVRs already have this feature? The ones I'm seeing from the large sattelite and cable companies don't have anything close to this.

Chances are good they're looking at the feature sets of consoles with integrated browsers and Flash (and potentially tuners going forward) as competition.

They already know what they're charging per month after spending hundreds on the box is simply ripping off their customers so they're throwing in some fluff. * y a w n *

Don't like YouTube

90% of the time I try and watch a video on YT it starts, stutters, freezes and then goes through the same loop. The video quality sucks, and most of the shaky cam video's aren't worth watching.

Re: Don't like YouTube

I've never gone to YouTube on purpose. I'm sure there's some good stuff there; I encounter links to YouTube on useful sites that I visit--seems like a dead-simple way to "distribute" how-to and other video content, but since I'd need a computer to really find my way there for such a purpose, being able to watch tons of videos of questionable worth on my TV doesn't really thrill me. (However, you can't be too rich, too thin, or have too many features... well, unless you "bloat-up"--good luck, TiVo... hope you don't break anything else while adding this.)

(More importantly, 8-track's were OK; they just stopped development because something cheaper came along that was easier to work with and improve. Ahhh, the good ole days!)

Stuttering on YouTube is not normal. I'd blame your ISP for that. But one thing you can do to even it out is to press pause just after you start, and let it buffer for a while before resuming play. (You can even buffer the whole thing if necessary.)

The video quality is variable, and many clips are very well worth watching.

If it's my ISP why is it that I can stream very well from other sites? I tried buffering, it doesn't help.
Even if they have clips that are worth watching, what I have seen are grainy, crud lighting, and usually shaky cam clips.
Some of my friends have put video on YT, and trying to watch them has been a lesson in frustration and embarrasment.

Well, I can only tell you that I don't have any such problem. And if all you're seeing is "shaky cam clips", then you're looking at the wrong stuff. That doesn't fit my YouTube experience, either.

Re: I love my Tivo

Does YouTube keep the full quality uploads of the videos so they can go back and re-encode all of the vids later as the codecs improve?

The shaky or high motion videos on YouTube suck due to them being .flv's and the horribly low bit rate they use. Even then, my CPU fan on my laptop cranks really high when watching YouTube vids. Can Series 2 Tivo's handle the CPU load?

This is for series 3s and HDs, not earlier units.

Ah, ok. Darn! Well, I doubt I will be getting a Series 3 as my Sony Series 1 TiVo and two Series 2's are working just fine for the moment. Though HD would be nice on my 47" Vizio LCD HDTV. The only thing that burns me is that the last time I checked, TiVo now charges full price for add-on boxes.

You can still get the multi-service discount on additional boxes for $9.95 a month or $99 per year.

I've got a series 3 HD hooked up to my 42" Toshiba LCD and an OTA antenna and it's amazingly good. Beats the snot out of what Comcast tries to pass off as HD here.

But why? Most You Tube Videos look crap on a small computer display.
Imagine how much worse it's going to look on a 50" Plasma display?

Re: I love my Tivo

All of the details have not been released but if the Apple TV implementation is to be believed then a similar re-encoding may be in the works.

I agree that most of YouTube is crap.

I would think they do because they re-encoded their entire library to h.264 for apple and the iphone/ipod touch since neither device has flash.

youtube looks like crap

why would anyone low res youtube crap on their TV?
i could understand streaming HiRes Stage6 content,
(before the bastards shut them down), but why would
I want to watch youtube on anything more than my
already crappy cell phone screen? I think TiVo is
using this as a marketing gimmick, nothing else.
