Time Warner Cable : 10Mbps/1Mbps Standard
Advertising faster speeds in Texas & New York
by Karl Bode Tuesday 29-Aug-2006 tags: business · bandwidth · cable
Time Warner Cable users in parts of Texas and New York claim their local offices are advertising that standard users will be upgraded to 10Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream by September 15. Time Warner was apparently advertising the new speeds at the NY State Fair, according to one of our users.

Well, I'm in Kenosha, WI, and still on the 5 MB / 384 KB plan. So, unless I'm missing something, I'll never see this upgrade for quite a long time.

But...but....but you're in California.

CALIFORNIA for the love of peet moss.

The State provides (or mandates) EVERYTHING in California. How could you possibly be left wanting?

Somebody call up Susan Sarandon and demand answers!

I'm sure it was just an oversight. Royal California Light and Fiber should be rolling FiOS to your door any second now.

Actually you are 2 years off. Its 2010 when DOCSIS 3 will be finalized. You will have to wait until then to receive more speed.

I'll complain about it when I actually get that kind of upload speed. Since I'm stuck with 384 up, I'll save my complaints for 1mb uploads for a later date.

1mbps upload is pretty much standard fare among cable given you have to pay more for it but its offered.

This just probably means they are doing upgrades. Service was bad for 1-2 months before the jump from 2-3 Mb down, and 3-5 Mb down, so maybe it should be taken as a good sign .

Fios Land

I live in Fios land and have both RR thru BHN and Fios thru Verizon. The low up load speed on RR is killing me.
I use VPN and VoIP since I work form home a lot; thank God for Fios!!!!

upload speeds need to increase

I'm glad standard users in select TWCNY areas
are getting decent speeds of 10/1. But why are premium users also getting 1mbps upload even though downstream gets a boost to 15mbps? I believe all areas should have at least 2mbps upload for premium customers. Cable in fact is capable of more upstream, so why not offer an elite extreme tier that would give users 30/2 or 20/3 or something nice that shows off more of the upstream? Hell why not even try a 3/3 tier or something like that? I've never seen an industry so afraid to use their technology. Let's show off what this stuff is really capable of!

Would be nice if TWC would offer something above 384k upload. Sadly TWC doesn't upgrade all their systems, only select markets. Living in the Cincinnati, Ohio area we will probably not get this upgrade to standard anytime soon...

Not in Kansas City

I called the local TWC office in Kansas City. Fortunatly, they are NOT upgrading the speeds in Kansas City. Kansas City area residents should be content with 5M/384K. It looks like Time Warner is only deploying where FIOS or LightSpeed is offering higher speeds.

I guess I'll keep my 6M/768K DSL for a little longer.

adelphia was still faster

Adelphia had a 16/2 tier, i mean the speed was like 4/2 to 8/2 in actuality, but at least they offered this. If they go 10/1 in Maine I may switch over from GWI.

Cable One needs to go...

I'm desperate for "Gayble One" to be taken over by Time Warner or atleast Comcast; Charging $59.95 for a 5 mbit/500 kbit; which is also their maximum tier for "Residential". I also believe business is maxed out at 5 mbit with a 768 kbit max upload...

10/1 - not in NYC

As far as I know, the new standard rate in NYC will be 7MBs down and 512kbps up. I WISh it would goto 10/1 or 10/2 like Cablevision customers are getting. That, at least, would compete directly with FIOS and RR's better network backbone would make them the best choice for broadband. Unfortunately, it looks like that's not going to happen.

And, of course, NO one at Time Warner seems to be making any announcements, but the rumors are that there is an upgrade in progress, there are problems, and that it all should be completed in NYC by mid-September. Hmm...
