Time Warner Cable 50 Mbps Arrives in Buffalo, Dallas
Expect a flurry of market announcements shortly...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 10-Mar-2010 tags: business · bandwidth · cable · RoadRunner Cable
As we recently noted, Time Warner Cable is a little behind in terms of DOCSIS 3.0 cable upgrades, and has sold faster 50 Mbps broadband service to just 2,000 users in parts of New York City. However, the company is poised for a fairly quick push into a number of additional markets over the next few weeks. One Time Warner Cable employee familiar with the plans tells Broadband Reports that Time Warner Cable signed up their first DOCSIS 3.0 customer in Buffalo, New York today.

Click for full size
Other markets should be launching in quick succession, so expect a wave of official announcements either this week or next.

Another supposed live-but-unannounced market is Dallas, where users in our forums are the first to note that the service is up and running, and should be live for everyone in the market by the nineteenth of this month (aka late next week). Users interested in the fastest speeds these upgrades offer will of course need to upgrade to a new DOCSIS 3.0-compliant modem.

Users in upgraded markets can sign up for a new 30 Mbps downstream 5 Mbps upstream tier that costs $25 over Time Warner Cable's standard plan (which can vary in price and speed by market depending on competition). Users also have the choice of signing up for a 50 Mbps downstream 5 Mbps upstream tier for $99 a month. That's less expensive than Verizon's 50 Mbps FiOS tier, which costs $140 bundled, or $145 standalone. That $99 price tag is the same for Time Warner Cable whether you bundle additional services or not.

Regional promotional pages have been popping up in Time Warner Cable markets the company plans to upgrade. The carrier has long stated that these upgrades will be "surgical" in nature -- which when translated means markets where Time Warner Cable sees competition from Verizon FiOS or AT&T U-Verse (and that's roughly about a third of Time Warner Cable's market). Those interested should take a look at Time Warner Cable's Wideband FAQ.

50/5 seems a little expensive

Maybe cheaper bundled?

TWC - Don't forget about L.A.

No DOCSYS 3.0 that I know about in my parts (West San Fernando Valley). They've been showing ads locally that say we've "increased our speeds for no added fees." I have no idea what they're talking about, since my speeds are still around 3 3mbps down, although upload speeds have increased marginally.

Re: TWC - Don't forget about L.A.

Expensive.
In L.A. (Santa Clarita actually), I get ~30Mbps/1Mbps as part of the standard 'All the Best' package (voice/data/tv) for $99. This is Docsis 1.1.

I'm not going to pay $25 extra to get 50Mbps service.

That's mostly PowerBoost...I'm more interested in upload speed anyway...

I agree that its mostly (or all) power boost.
I currently don't even need more than the 10/1 that's offered.

The increased the standard sub to 10/1 and the Turbo one to 15/2. The lite is still either 3 or 5 Mbps. In any case, it has taken them THREE YEARS since the first 15/2's were released to finally update everyone to those new speeds.

I don't expect TWC in SoCal to do anything soon, they have been slowing down with deployments since they took over Adelphia, and quality in the socal area has gone down tremendously over the last 2 years or so.

@en102: The 30 Mb is probably due to powerboost, that won't be your sustained speed.

Do you have FIOS in your area? I live on the border between Garland and Mesquite. We can get whatever AT&T, Version, TW, and others have to offer. Because of the competition over on this side of the metroplex, I have been getting higher speed without ever upgrading. I started at 3Mbps, then it got increased to 4Mbps, then 6Mbps, and the last time I checked I was getting 15-17Mbps. I never paid for an upgrade. After they roll out 50Mbps, I wonder what my speeds will be even if I don't pay for an upgrade. I have gotten an offer from TW for the DOSIS 3.0 upgrade in the past week.

There is plenty of competition in SoCal of both FIOS, U-Verse, and 3d-party DSL vendors..... but the network in SoCal has been mismanaged for years now. We're behind on HD channels, we're behind on Docsis 3.0, we're way behind in customer service people actually having a clue.

And yeah.... since big urban areas with plenty of competition aren't seeing anything soon, you can bet that areas where the major alternative is a 3 Mbps DSL line.... is indeed never going to see it.

I was hoping that since we were there test market over the years for several key technologies (Digital phone, SDV, etc) they would want to use us again for DOCSIS 3...but I suppose they had other plans.

Re: Grrr...

Digital Phone and SDV they have to roll out system-wide anyways, because there are so many alternatives for your phone (including mobile and replacing landlines alltogether), and watching television (including 2 major nationwide satellite providers).

Not so with Internet, it needs to be delivered to your house accross a cable (although some areas are experimenting with cheaper WiMax solutions, its not all that much faster then a decent DSL line), and thus the competition is a lot less.

TWC is doing a "surgical rollout", which basically means that you are out of luck of your competition is 3 Mbps / 786 Kbps DSL. (Or worse, 1.5/384)

Well, if that logic is true, the hotbed of tech competition and oneupsmanship that is Columbia, SC should be seeing this bad boy roll out in 15-20 yrs.

I made the Wideband link work for our division by substituting in "Northeast"...that is probably the way it is designed versus them actually getting close to launching it, but it is still nice to look at and dream. maybe we can call and say that it says its available on the website?

NJ?

I'm paying ~$45/month (to Earthlink), I'd like some of that 30/5 love, but not at $25 over the standard price.

Update:
contacted CS and was told that "Wideband" is available in my area. $99.95 for 50Mbps down and $40.95 one time charge for installation.

Asked about the 30/5 Tier and got pricing/speeds on regular RR service.

I guess I'll have to live with 10Mbps/512k. sigh.

I rather have a 20mbit connection that has no limit then 30mbit or 50mbit with 50-100GB per month Caps
with 20mbit you can do 7GB in an hour or 84GB in half a day
or 168gb in one day

He is correct and will soon be enforced so your wallet goes empty faster then milking cow
TW doesn't have much bandwidth and all their speed upgrade are a hoax
so stifle competition
so they can remain in control and be able to milk the public as a monopoly
unlimited bandwidth doesn't exist for TW customer
higher speed mean more paying more so why not?
paying more mean TW can go to the bank more often

Decent price

TWC Standard is $40-$50 in most markets, right? Guess that would put 30/5 at $65-$75 per month, which isn't bad at all.

the 30/5 plan would be about $70 for a good share of TWC's footprint as their prices are pretty much the same across the board.

Albany, NY

I was told that the upgrades in nycap.rr.com district have been completed and modems would be available in the spring with a major launch in the summer including all sort of marketing. Mostly aimed at the suburbs of Albany which have FIOS, however the city will also get it.

Right now the standard RR service in Albany is 25/1. Only as a result of FIOS being a player in the suburbs. FIOS does not offer TV services here. My father is paying 69.99 for 25/25 in Latham.

No I have the basic rr, I do not have power boost. Actually powerboost is not available/advertised here. There is RR Extreme or something like it, but it is more expensive. I have the basic 39.99 RR, no cable tv. I do not know what the advertized speed of it is, but on speedtest.net i test from around 17-24 down depending on server. Since the basic fios package is 25 down here, I would assume RR is matching it. Also when I got rid of cable some time ago, my price did not go up for not having cable. Virtually everyone in Albany has rr since VZ does not offer fios in the city and dsl is crap here. More than half the population are students who need broadband as a requirement for school and the rest of the population is made up from progressive employees at various universities and hospitals and the ghetto where everyone has the triple tier. There is a free municipal wifi network, but the signal is weak and typically works well only by a window by big streets, called AlbanyFeeNet.

ok...than it does.

I do not watch TV and there is not much advertizing. I have whatever is standard. I got this account in 2001 and back then it was 39.99 for rr, no gimmicks, no choices. On speedtests I get between 17 and 24 down (usually around 23) and just about a mbit up.

not too worried since I have this all day...

Good to see

some movement on this by Time Warner. In all the years I had Road Runner I always found them to be a great service and at the leading edge of keeping up with the times. The last year had me wondering however why they weren't pursuing an aggressive D3 roll out with it being such a popular and cost effective next generation service. I'd have to think that seeing Comcast's outstanding results the last few quarters has convinced them they should move quickly now to get this rolled out to all their areas.
Many on this website who use them will be grateful I'm sure as users have been with Comcast.
I particularly like the middle tiers and in this case the 30/5 tier for 25.00 more. That seems to be the sweet spot in terms of pricing and performance.

Welcome back to the land of performance Road Runner.

Many missed you I'm sure. I've always thought this is one of the best brands out there and the character so symbolic of what it represents in internet..and this will again do it the justice it so rightfully deserves.

And, just for old times sake..let me once again sign off with...

KC in the works for 50Mbps

A TWC employee on avsforums says Kansas City will soon start a 50Mbps rollout. He claimed the upgrade would allow for 150Mbps future upgrades.

I have 7Mbps now and don't need that much. I'd rather pay a less for 4Mbps, which is all I need for Netflix HD streaming.

Cheaper then fios but less upload.

Charging $99 for the triple play bundle that has speed of 50/5. Is not the best way to compete with FIOS or U-Verse. In areas FIOS is available in Dallas, why would someone spend $99 for 50/5 internet and limited HD. When they can get FIOS 35/35 internet and over 130 HD channels? I'm not sure what U-Verse offers in the area but i'm pretty sure its comparable to fios.

Business pricing?

Anyone know what the pricing/speeds will be for Dallas D3 tiers? Just called TWC and the rep there doesn't have any idea...

What's annoying is that TWC has precious little information on their website about their service. Wish they would do like the DSL companies and Cox and put their whole rate schedule up for 'net access...

TWC vs Fios

FIOS is in my part of Buffalo (Tonawanda).

Today I just have TWC for the cable modem as I was too far from the CO for DSL. The turbo package for 15/5 is $57.95 a month.

I currently have TV through DirecTV but if I bundle FIOS TV/Internet, my bundle price for the 2 year commitment is less than my combined TWC and DirecTV.

While the change from 15 to 25 down won't effect me much, having 25 up would be a pickup and help with my work from home on VPN as well as my VPN tunnels back to my equipment.

With notice from TWC raising rates on stand alone cable modems and DirecTV latest rate hike, having a locked in price for 2 years will help me. Sorry TWC, too little, too late.

The difference between. . .

50mbps cable and VZ's fios: with fios you get your speeds all the time unlike on cable you'll be lucky to see at 3am.
FTTH: 2400mbps shared among 32 users vs cables 160mbps[assuming all 4 channels in use] shared among 500+ people!

500? Really? Maybe back in 2001. A typical node will pass about 200 homes (that's passed.... not served) and they're bringing that number down each year with more node splits. So if your Internet penetration rate is 30% (which is a very generous percentage) you're looking at about 60 homes worse case.

Long awaited announcement...

I have a friend in my area who has been waiting for the 50Mbps/5Mbps speeds to come to Buffalo since he knows he won't be getting FiOS at his home for a very long time. I'm glad to see it finally announced and ready to go. FiOS is two miles away from here, and I am anticipating some speed boosts from Verizon and Time Warner in the future. Time Warner on the upload side.
