Time Warner Cable Bumping Speeds Slightly
by Karl Bode 08:13AM Monday Aug 05 2013 Tipped by motorola870 See Profile
Users in our Time Warner Cable forum state that the carrier has been busily bumping speeds slightly on many of the company's broadband tiers, and is now joining other carriers in over-provisioning delivered speeds just enough to make themselves look better in speed tests.

"I have 30/5 tier now it is more 34/5.8," notes Broadband Reports user motorola870 See Profile, adding that "someone in Dallas with the 75Mbps tier is now getting 85Mbps down and 5.6Mbps."

One major reason ISPs are over-delivering on advertised speeds now? Using data collected from their army of volunteers with custom firmware-embedded routers, the FCC recently started naming and shaming ISPs that fail to deliver advertised speeds at peak hours.

30/5

I have the 30/5 tier and am not seeing an increase, my speed tests are about the same as the day I got it. Ran one just now and got 31.06 down 5.08 up.

Edit: I take that back after restarting my modem I got 34.18 down 5.57 up.

this is called "FLUFF" since your tier label does not change. Verizon, Cablevision and others have done this for several years running... typical 50mbit tiers run 58 - 60 down and 5 becomes 8 up or 25 becomes 27-30 up.. for example. however, TWC is just about dead last on this bandwagon.. as even smaller cable companies and ISPs outside the usa offer this fluff by now.

I remember once TWC took over from adelphia the 10mbit was capped at 10000kbit & 512kbit/s (YES they downgraded the internet upload speed when they took over)
when we had adelphia it was 7mbit with 865kbit upload I think that was on the 6mbit/768k plan.

the way it was set up it was impossible to get the advertised speed regardless .

I don't get my rated speeds from testmy.net either, but that's because of their host limitations. testmy.net is mostly well designs, but has a few flaws that can show depending on how peering is setup and where you are located in the USA.

Useless

In my area, until you get to 30/5, you are stuck with 1 Mbps upload which is pretty much useless if you want to do any cloud activities (crashplan would take weeks). The list goes on, but in 2013 that is simply useless. Even 30/5 is like sipping bits through a straw. And to top it off 30/5 is $70 a month + buy your cable modem--and that's a promo rate.

Contrast to FIOS: 50/25, + Select HD for $75.

I just switched my parents off of TWC totally--sort of. The two play was $120 (if you can believe that w/ 15/1) w/ a DTA. Since they are a monopoly, they have to bend over. Not even DSL.

Moved them to Earthlink 10/1.5 which IS TWC for $29 a month for 6 months. TWC doesn't even offer that tier, and this is probably good for 90% of the population for streaming. Even after 6 months it's $40 and they GIVE A FREE MODEM. This I find amusing that the upload is faster than TWC "premium" tiers.

Also TV went to Dish. $35 a month for a year w/ the duo (they dont need the hopper and the duo is fine).

If you guys have Earthlink available, check it out. Even if you flip flop you can save $$$.

The worst part of the Earthlink signup experience was waiting 20 minutes to connect to TWC install people just to have them tell my mom the bill is late and it is due the 15th. Last time I checked the 15th isn't for another 10 days. What a joke TWC is.

Prior to Adelphia collapsing they had faster speeds 10 years ago than these jokers have today. I had 15/2 (now 15/1) ten years ago....And they actually serviced the customer.

The problem in my hood (WNY), TWC owns like 80% of the market so they don't give a s**t about anyone. Thankfully FIOS is in my area, and seeing a TWC truck is like sighting a 57 Chevy on the road.

ITS NOT EVEN CLOSE to VERIZON.

Re: Useless

I'm pretty sure Turbo in the WNY/Buffalo region is 2Mbps up. Otherwise, it's 1Mbps for Lite, Basic, and Standard.

But yes, FiOS.

Re: Useless

You are correct. I just checked. In CNY it's one, but regardless it's pathetic compared to say Comcast,etc.... When I had TWC/Adelphia turbo it was 15/2. It looks like they downgraded it to 15/1 tho.

Re: Useless

Turbo used to be 15/2 so perhaps that's what you're looking at. Standard used to be 10Mbps/1Mbps (I recall Adelphia's standard tier being 4Mbps/384kbps), and both tiers had PowerBoost. Now, PowerBoost seems to be gone and the tiers simply got download boosts.

So basically, old: Standard of 10Mbps/1Mbps with PB, Turbo of 15Mbps/2Mbps . New, Standard of 15Mbps/1Mbps and Turbo of 20Mbps/2Mbps.

I do feel like the upload on Standard should be 1.5Mbps and Turbo 3Mbps, which would not be too bad. That's also to say Time Warner still seems to give Turbo users DOCSIS 2 modems which can't get that speed at night. In my neighborhood DOCSIS 2 struggles to get 15Mbps at night. It's somewhere between 7Mbps and 16Mbps.

Re: Useless

Turbo in CNY was never 2 mbit up on the old tiers. It was 1*15 and 20 bucks more than standard (1*10). I thought that was not a good price relative to value. Kinda how the 5*30 tier was a sweeter spot than 5*50.

SamKnows rocks

In my monthly report card for July, I noticed a nasty, nasty drop around July 15/16. The speed drop stayed in place for about 10 days.

That prompted me to look at my cable modem stats and saw some nasty line noise issues. So, opened a ticket with TWC. They seemed interested in the SK logs.

Speeds are more normal now. So, we'll see how long that stays in place.

Power boost is gone

Power boost is gone aswell

data collected shows over inflated value ratio so I expect cable co's that used "cheat boost" should be lower.

Also with ATT you get 1536Kb/s for the 1.5 plan and 384

after overhead it's about 1.0 or 1.1mbps depending on signals at the time since they are subject to outside interference .
300kbit/s to 320kbit on the upstream

yes I remember At&t's cheap provisioning where they rip you off as I had the 6/768 tier and I would only get 5.1/512 and when I switched to TWC I got the advertised speed and then some

Oh and I am betting At&t might just offer the 45/6 tier at my address sooner rather than later as I am about 500-800 ft. from the VRAD with the loop included plus the junction box is in my backyard and I may be even able to the 75Mbps tier too! but yeah their speeds are never what is advertised.

At this rate TWC...

We should see Road Runner have 100-150Mbps downloads and 15Mbit uploads in about another 5 years.
By then, everyone else will have 100Mbit+, 30Mbit+ uploads and not to mention, CBS and Showtime programming!

That's why I give props to Optimum, they have 35Mbps upload with their ultra tier.

Meh, as a OOL customer in Brooklyn, NY, the new upload speed is more of a marketing gimmick than actual sustained speeds only delivering 60% of advertised upload at peak time.

This is all a sick joke...

A barely perceptable increase in download speed, coupled with a 25% increase in unbundled rates to take effect in the next billing cycle... yep, I'm on basic 3000/512 and I go from $36 to $45 a month.

Time to switch to Earthlink BB; same wire, a little more $ but double the DL speed.

Not feeling it in SW Ohio

I got the standard package on 7/23 - 15 down. Testing speed here to VA - 9.5 down. Test on TWs speed server to Troy, OH - 11 down at most. Even rebooted the modem the other day to see if there would be a change and none.
