Time Warner Cable COO Hobbs Departs
COO famous for insisting $2/GB overages were good for you...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 14-Dec-2010 tags: business · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Time Warner Cable
Tipped by hobgoblin See Profile
Time Warner Cable has announced that there has been a shake up at the executive level, with COO Landel C. Hobbs leaving the company, to be replaced by Time Warner Cable executive Robert D. Marcus. Broadband Reports readers will remember Hobbs from Time Warner Cable's disastrous attempt to implement caps as low as 1 GB a month with overages as high as $2 per gigabyte. Hobbs tried his best to argue at the time that such punitive overages imposed during a recession was good for consumers. Not only did Hobbs think low caps and expensive per gig overages were "only fair," he tried to argue that they'd "actually encourage more use of broadband overall." Consumers didn't agree. The Time Warner Cable press statement doesn't make it clear if this was a voluntary or involuntary departure.

$2 would be great if he was talking about cellular overages.

Re: .

They should charge $2 per GB for the lowest tier broadband and only charge when you use up that GB. And I'm talking when you hit that first GB regardless of the date. So if it takes you 2 months to hit 1 GB then you pay TWC $2.

That would truly benefit the consumer.

Or you can buy 100 GB for $.25 per GB or 500 GB for $.10 per GB using the same plan. You pay when you hit your limit.

But they don't want to give you a great rate they want you to buy small and get hit up with ridiculous overages like the wireless carriers.

He was asked to leave

"I speak for all Time Warner Cable employees in wishing him the absolute best in the next phase of his life and career."

In other words, we don't care where he's going as long as it isn't here.

So if he's gone...

So if he's gone based on proposing overage charges, how is it that the execs at AT&T wireless are still around after changing the iPhone data plans from unlimited data (30.00) to a tiered system based on overages:

200 MB for 15 dollars (overage of 15 dollars for each 200 MB over)
2 GB for 25 dollars (overage of 10 dollars for each GB over)

Doesn't compute...

Re: So if he's gone...

I still don't understand why TW would dump him and AT&T keeps the beancounters who came up with the new data plans.

Are new AT&T customers actually excited about receiving capped data for only 5 dollars less a month with the prospect of 10 dollars per GB overages? Are customers really happy about this?

I guess you guys got a little bit more out of the article than I did. Apparently you guys know he got fired because he wanted to impose caps and overage charges. I didnt see that anywhere here or in the link provided.

Who says that is why he is gone? Execs go for many reasons. Their own reasons if they decided to leave on their own. And if forced out, it is usually over a power struggle at the top over who will be calling the shots day to day.

not even the telcos

the telcos who were there at the birth of the internet never cooked up "metered billing", they just charged ALOT for the service upfront. leave it to a cable industry to take the intenet and try to profiteer as if they are the ONLY service providers serious about deploying to the residential consumer. with the exception of Verizon and (the recombined) AT&T, that's really the case, but the cable industry's had a 10 year head start in the residential market and 20+ in cable-tv. greedy cable companies stealing PHONE CUSTOMERS is what got telcos back into the game. however, the market is still very dysfunctional and a duopoly/monopoly (depding upon geogrpahy) mess.

can't wait for those 50, 100+mbit tiers to trickle down to us consumers at AFFORDABLE RATES. how long will this take? 2 years, 5 years, 10 years? live in a broadband black hole? no internet for you!

Not for long

No anti-consumer executive stays unemployed for long. Sounds like the kind of guy certain Canadian companies are looking for. And, if not, he can double-dip with extended unemployment benes plus a fat tax break.

The telcos need to wake up

Is it me, or are telcos the only people who actually charge customers through the teeth for using MORE services?

So I pay $10 for 1000min (0.01/min), and 1000+ minutes + I pay 0.25c a minute. so I pay $10 for 1000min and $10 for 40 minutes, and that is the BULK rate. Now I work for a software company, and if the customer wants to buy more, we smile, give them a bigger discount, and count the benjamins. Telcos smile, and we cry and bend over. Then they wonder why the consumer/company relationship is strained.

If these guys want to go to hyper-metered (which is stupid considering the economics) hyper-metered= charging more for bulk than for base, then they need to make the bulk rates cheaper, not 10x+ higher than the base rate.

They could always blah blah about network stress, but we all know that is just BS.. These guys are just starting to light up fibre thats been sitting in the ground from the dot com era, not to mention that network gear and trunk lines keep getting lower in cost. I can tell you personally because I own TME customers and know what their costs are..

The future is going to be in cloud services and content, all of this childish banter about line speed and rates will be a mere memory in a decade, that is unless the FCC lets the companies go wild, then watch out.

Already w/ Comcast/NBC you will see consolidation just roll.
