Time Warner Cable: 10 Million Broadband Users
But Again Loses Basic Cable Subs in Latest Quarter
by Karl Bode Thursday 28-Apr-2011 tags: business · bandwidth · cable · RoadRunner Cable · Time Warner Cable
Time Warner Cable has released their first quarter earnings, which note that the nation's second-largest cable company's first-quarter income rose to $325 million from $214 million a year ago. The company continues to bleed cable subscribers to telcoTV competition, losing 65,000 basic video customers during the first quarter. However, Time Warner Cable offset those losses by adding 84,000 digital phone customers and a better-than-expected 189,000 broadband customers, bringing the company's broadband subscriber total past 10 million for the first time. "Our high-speed data product just crossed the 10 million subscriber threshold and is quickly becoming the anchor product in the eyes of consumers," insists Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt.

Maine market

Time Warner picked up a bunch of Digital Phone subscribers a few years ago in their Maine and New Hampshire markets when FairPoint bought the landlines from Verizon. My Grandma in Biddeford, Maine dumped FairPoint and switched to Time Warner for home phone when FairPoint could not even send a straight bill and had horrible customer service. They keep sending her bills for $2.41 with the words "Do Not Pay" on them AND she cancelled service with them a few years ago shortly after they took over. At least with Time Warner, their service actually works, where I live Comcast refuses to fix my constantly dropping Internet. The only downside of Time Warner is they don't use batteries in their EMTAs (despite having a battery slot) so if her power goes out, she loses phone but she has an AT&T cell phone that is old enough to say Cingular on it.

You will continue to see basic losses from all majors

You will not see an increase in basic subs for the foreseeable future from any of the big majors. Housing start are down and will continue to be down and foreclosures haven't stopped their upward trend. There are just not enough possible connects to see any type of increase in basic subs. Food and gas vs entertainment. Guess who wins?

Or it could be that free antenna tv and netflix are actually cheaper then basic cable.

Actually, Full price DirecTV is cheaper than TWC's basic cable in some markets.

I pay $44.99 a month (No Taxes/Fees) for Dish. This is for the Americas 120 package and includes Free HD for Life. 2 Tv's hooked up.

Cord cutters are where those subs went. telco tv is just as overpriced as cable.

Another reason is due to more competition. In my hood TWC was the only option in the past. Now ATT Uverse is coming in, Surewest is in my hood just now (FTTH) - Clearwire is here and some may use LTE for home connection.

I left TWC for Clearwire but then TWC offered a great deal so I went back (and no throttling/caps so far). The deal is only good for a year but I'll be shopping with Surewest after deal is over or at least use them for leverage.

TWC is the one who will lose in the end and will continue to shrink. They had a default monopoly in many markets that no longer exists.

I personally just switched from U-verse to TWC for Internet

so I'm one of the crowd, see my review here

still using TWC for TV service -- I find it better picture quality than U-verse.

AT&T

Does anyone know if a bunch of the broadband additions are due to AT&T's decision to cap their service? AT&T defections?

Same thought.

I think it is too early to say as uverse subs are still 'shell shocked' by the CAP announcement.

Next quarter will be a much better indication. I've seen quite a lot of people (some of them posting in this thread) switching back to TWC not only because of the CAP but because of faster internet speeds and better picture quality.

Basic Cable $$$

"Basic" cable costs somewhere around $60-70/month outside of promotional rates. Singles and families on the margins will forgo the expense in favor of actual necessities.

CableCo would retain more subscribers if they offered ala carte programming without the promotional gimmicks.

Re: Basic Cable $$$

I formerly had TWC, and just switched to DirecTV. TWC had just sent me a note that my price for basic TV (no HD) and Internet Lite was going to go up $30 at the begining of May. I was paying $100 for the above mentioned service. $130 (plus tax!!) for the most basic package sucks monkey balls. I switched to DirecTV, which after the first year of my contract expires I will be paying $64 for service which has a MUCH sharper picture than I had back when I had TWC digital HD service. Im paying less and getting WAY more.

Why stay?

Re: Basic Cable $$$

$130/Mo for basic cable? Are you sure you don't have the triple play with digital TV?

Reason I ask is because the TWC WI rates are a lot better than what we have here in Texas. »www.timewarnercable.com/Wisconsi···linkid=0

TWC have them listed at $94.85 for TV, internet and phone for TWO YEARS! Which is not bad.

Upgrade

I wonder if Time Warner will *ever* upgrade to D3. The fact that they're not willing to spend the puny amount of money required to do so is an indication of how utterly greedy they are.

We in Eastern NC have been waiting and waiting for that same D3 upgrade. Some day......
You live in a Cave? D3 is in our area! I just got it installed in the greater Cleveland area the other day. 30/5 Road Runner.

um... not necessarily Telco TV

I actually ditched U-Verse for 30/5 road runner and dropped cable completely, I use the internet to acquire/watch the stuff I want to watch. Their boxes were awful anyway (TWC).

OhNoes

@24.42.114.x

D3 for everyone in 2050!

Well the sad part is that instead of losing Broadband customer TWC is getting more and they don't even need to upgrade to Docsis 3. Soo guess what? they will sit on their butt even harder now, don't expected any rush from them to upgrade to D3.

lazy competition...

sooner or later (mostly later) TWC and Cablevision will have to recognize the overlap & preference for Verizon FIOS symmetric broadband and offer competitive prices & tiers. unfortunately the only way for consumers to let these lazy companies know is when you cancel your account, make sure you let them know you want SYMMETRIC, higher speed broadband for a cheaper price. for the OTHER 4 / 80 million broadband subscribers the speed DOES matter-- a majority of the rest probably would if they could switch but most of them live in Comcast, AT&T and CentryTel(the Rboc formely known as Qwest)
