FiOS is FTTP for EVERYONE, not just for people in specific markets. Wheres my fios then if its for everyone? Very cute, but you're misrepresenting my point. NO system is available to everyone. But for areas where FiOS IS available, they don't have different types of delivery mechanisms. They don't reserve FTTH just for their uber-rich customers. I was countering the point that Verizon is like TWC in that they put a 'premium' on FTTH. They don't. Granted, they won't go into areas where it's not feasible for them to do so, but guess what? There are ares around here (and I live pretty darn close to Philly) where Comcast won't run their cable because it's not economically feasible for them to do so (neighborhoods where the houses are 'too' far apart - heck, on the street where my in-laws live, they had to PAY the cable company at the time to run the line up their street - not just to their house, but to actually just run the line up their street).
That to me is valid. If you don't think you can recoup your investment (cost) for setting someone up, then it makes sense not to hook them up. But what TWC is doing is dfferent. They're reserving their better technology for the uber-rich. Verizon does NOT do that. Everyone who can get fios gets FTTH. Period.

| Well there is going to be a point when all new developments have fiber to the home, while old developments will sit on old technology for a long while. And it makes perfect since to start off the installation of a new medium in an area where everyone will easily pay for your highest tier. You have to start somewhere. Anyone know the eventual price of this fiber service? | |

| cheaper for Cable MSO's One thing for the cable companies it will be cheaper for them to run fiber to the home because they already have Fiber to the node in their HFC plant. Which is at street service level.
So for those of you who think ATT is running the latest and greatest tech, they are doing pretty much what the cable co's have been doing. Uverse is noce for competition, but it is a joke. They should have did what verizon has done. Fiber to the house.

You're not required to by TV either or Telephone in MI. Just have to change over to the Fiber and be prepared not to use any ISP for Internet except Yahoo!

HI telcom doesnt have anything but DSL. It is around the same speeds but a little cheaper (depending on what the user wants) but TWC could easily match the pricing and speed.

How fat is the pipe coming into Hawaii? If Japan can't get 100Mbps overseas I pretty sure Hawaii won't. I don't think there is any content stored on Hawaii that needs 100Mbps unless Google is handing out HD camera's to record every time time a surfer screws up to upload to Youtube.

1 edit | Re: What good is it? said by ricep5 :I guess the point I am making is that those new trans-pacific links are rationed, so regardless of what your link speed is 100 Mbps fiber or 4Mbps DSL, your access to anything mainland will be limited to what ever the ISP pays for. If all one will access is a web server in the resort lobby in Kona, then you definitely have something. Well we'll have to see what happens. I have HawTel 11Mbps DSL.I get pretty good speeds. For example I can download music off of ITunes at 1Mbps.
