One catch: You've got to be wealthy and live in Hawaii

Users in our Time Warner Cable forum offer up this interesting ad from Time Warner Cable in Hawaii about their future plans for symmetrical 100Mbps connectivity in Hawaii. Unfortunately for residents, this is only being offered to those who have homes in the Hualalai Resort area, a luxury development on the Kona-Kohala Coast of West Hawaii. It's the only instance I've seen where Time Warner Cable has opted for pure fiber, though you're seeing cable operators embrace FTTH more and more for new developments. In this case it looks like Higgins gets symmetrical 100Mbps, while TC, Rick and Magnum get 8Mbps/1Mbps.

Ahh, but does Robin Masters really exist, or is he a creation of Higgins? The world may never know The last episode left us hanging....

fiber to the $$ bank $$...

Well if Verizon isn't above putting a premium on it's FTTH pricing plans, why should TWC?

On the other hand, they both screw the consumer in terms of real value/true competition.. they both could do much, much, much (infinity X) better..

Re: fiber to the $$ bank $$...

very true. But he should at least give the two credit for deploying FTTH. You don't see AT$T doing much of it or even Qwest. WOW! and Bright House are far from FTTH.

it maybe in select markets as VZ has been talking about doing FTTN in select areas. Why create 2 brand names? just create 1 and make them use to different technologies.

Very cute, but you're misrepresenting my point. NO system is available to everyone. But for areas where FiOS IS available, they don't have different types of delivery mechanisms. They don't reserve FTTH just for their uber-rich customers. I was countering the point that Verizon is like TWC in that they put a 'premium' on FTTH. They don't. Granted, they won't go into areas where it's not feasible for them to do so, but guess what? There are ares around here (and I live pretty darn close to Philly) where Comcast won't run their cable because it's not economically feasible for them to do so (neighborhoods where the houses are 'too' far apart - heck, on the street where my in-laws live, they had to PAY the cable company at the time to run the line up their street - not just to their house, but to actually just run the line up their street).

That to me is valid. If you don't think you can recoup your investment (cost) for setting someone up, then it makes sense not to hook them up. But what TWC is doing is dfferent. They're reserving their better technology for the uber-rich. Verizon does NOT do that. Everyone who can get fios gets FTTH. Period.

Well Karl is already bashing TWC this morning. At least they're deploying FTTH. Many other provides would still deploy HFC.

Correction

Magnum would get symmetrical 100Mbps too because he lives with Higgins. TC and Rick would be stuck with the slower speeds.

Is anyone surprised by this? The expensive and new developments get FTTH while everyone else is out in the cold. Gee, maybe it is because they all can afford it and the price to deploy this fiber and terminate it at both ends is quite expensive.

I am not surprised in the least bit.

Well there is going to be a point when all new developments have fiber to the home, while old developments will sit on old technology for a long while. And it makes perfect since to start off the installation of a new medium in an area where everyone will easily pay for your highest tier. You have to start somewhere. Anyone know the eventual price of this fiber service?

With that kind of speed, 100 Mbps, there's no reason Zeus and Apollo shouldn't be allowed to wirelessly leach off their connection.

cheaper for Cable MSO's

One thing for the cable companies it will be cheaper for them to run fiber to the home because they already have Fiber to the node in their HFC plant. Which is at street service level.

So for those of you who think ATT is running the latest and greatest tech, they are doing pretty much what the cable co's have been doing. Uverse is noce for competition, but it is a joke. They should have did what verizon has done. Fiber to the house.

they do in select areas. Monroe County MI was one of SBC's first trial areas. Carlton MI actually has FTTP but its limited to what U-Verse can do in many areas.

You're not required to by TV either or Telephone in MI. Just have to change over to the Fiber and be prepared not to use any ISP for Internet except Yahoo!

Yahoo! is not an ISP, they a simply a web portal, the correct term would of been AT&T as the ISP. Which even then isent fully correct it would be AT&T advanced Soulutions d/b/a AT&T Internet Services.

It makes sense

Why stick to coax for new build outs? FTTH is obviously the best solution for high bandwidth end user deployment. TWC isn't dumb. They'll counter market against FiOS, but they know what the real truth is. Fiber is superior.

Re: It makes sense

They could have laid Copper all the way to the doors in that Development.

HI telcom doesnt have anything but DSL. It is around the same speeds but a little cheaper (depending on what the user wants) but TWC could easily match the pricing and speed.

The truth is .....

They will have a 90% penetration rate or pretty close to it . at the end of the day they are a business and need to get their money back . Deploying this on a poor neighborhood with 10-20% is profitable doesnt make much sense . If u were the owner of TW what would you do ????

Kinda pointless

How fat is the pipe coming into Hawaii? If Japan can't get 100Mbps overseas I pretty sure Hawaii won't. I don't think there is any content stored on Hawaii that needs 100Mbps unless Google is handing out HD camera's to record every time time a surfer screws up to upload to Youtube.

You should have asked "how fat is the TWC pipe coming into Hawaii?". I say this because there is a HUGE amount of capacity coming into Hawaii, it all depends on how much TWC bought/owns. There are multiple undersea cables connecting the mainland and Hawaii, and Hawaii is actually a "jumping off" point to parts of Asia.

Looks like prices start at around $10,000,000.

It should be noted that the development was named after the active volcano on the slopes of which it is located.

How much bandwidth to the Mainland?

I seriously doubt that they're going to give 100mbps access to subscribers when transit costs to the mainland are so friggin high.

This would've been a problem 8 years ago. But since then a lot of new bandwidth has come online.

What good is it?

If the trans-pacific pipe used to trunk the data is restricted due to capacity?

It may sound sexy and cool to those on Kona ("I have fiber!") but they still can't download re-runs of Magnum any faster than the schmoe on Oahu with DSL.

That would've been a issue about 8 years ago. But there has
been a number of fiber-optic optic upgrades done since then.

Re: What good is it?

I guess the point I am making is that those new trans-pacific links are rationed, so regardless of what your link speed is 100 Mbps fiber or 4Mbps DSL, your access to anything mainland will be limited to what ever the ISP pays for.

If all one will access is a web server in the resort lobby in Kona, then you definitely have something.

Well we'll have to see what happens. I have HawTel 11Mbps DSL.I get pretty good speeds. For example I can download music off of ITunes at 1Mbps.
