Time Warner Cable Launches 3G/4G Hotspot
Intelligo: $50 after $50 rebate with two-year contract
by Karl Bode Thursday 08-Jul-2010 tags: business · hardware · wireless
Like Comast, Time Warner Cable last fall launched a re-branded version of Clearwire Mobile WiMax service in a number of markets. Dubbed Roadrunner Mobile (see FAQ, coverage map and plans), the service is currently available in portions of Texas, North Carolina, Hawaii and Kansas City. Time Warner Cable gave us a nudge today to note that they're also now offering a 3G/4G hotspot called the "IntelliGo." The IntelliGo costs $49.99 after a $50.00 mail in rebate with a two year contract. It appears that the IntelliGo is the Sierra Wireless W801 Personal Mobile Hotspot -- and those curious can take a look at the device owner's manual (pdf).

Data MVNOs add no value

(posted this in Best Buy data MVNO article)

All these data MVNOs are not adding any value. Just get an EVO or Epic phone with 3G/4G and pay just $30/month/unlimited to share as a WiFi hotspot. Also works with 3G roaming. Technically there is a way to do it 'free' with rooted phones but it violates TOS.

I don't think Clear/BB/TWC data MVNOs include roaming and cost more than Overdrive that does include roaming. EVO/Epic phones cost even less while still being truly unlimited and allows roaming.

I don't see this model working unless the MVNOs add some kind of unique value.

Re: Data MVNOs add no value

Comcast does. They bundle the 4g network with their cable data service. 2 for the price of one.

Re: Data MVNOs add no value

How does the pricing on that work? Is it an additional charge for the 4g hotspot or is it included with your plan (like the free wifi hotspot on some carriers)?

If it's an additional fee I'll just use my phone wifi tether since I'm already paying for it.

I wonder if Verizon's 4g map will look like this...

Unlimited?

In the "plan":
Included Data Allowance: Unlimited

In the TOS:
2. A Maximum Monthly Bandwidth Cap May Apply

* (a) Your service order indicates whether you are subject to a maximum bandwidth cap on your Wireless Data Service. The cap states the aggregate number of megabytes of data that you may send and receive using the Wireless Data Service in a single billing cycle. If your use of the Wireless Data Services exceeds the cap in any billing cycle, you will be subject to an additional per-megabyte charge. The amount of this charge appears on your service order.

Which is it? Are you required to "order" it and then find out?

Re: Unlimited?

Pretty much every ISP has similar terms. They say they have a
"right to cap" but not saying there is a specific cap. Others do have very specific caps.
