Time Warner Cable Launches Wi-Fi in LA Free For Existing Customers in Southern California Time Warner Cable had a pretty rocky time when they first acquired Adelphia's cable and broadband networks in the region. Several years later the company has managed to improve service for most of those customers, and now according to the Los Angeles Times, intends on offering many customers access to a free Wi-Fi network. The move follows on the heels of Cablevision, who on the east coast spent a few extra million to provide NYC metro-area customers with free Wi-Fi along commute routes and in parks. Not-particularly-creatively dubbed TWC Wi-Fi, the $15 million network will provide users service in both Los Angeles and Orange counties, though initially over a relatively small forty mile zone in Southern California. Time Warner Cable users get service for free, but non-customers can access the service for $2.95 for one hour, $6.95 for a day; $19.95 for a week or $49.95 for a monthly plan.

| Awful Company I can't begin to describe how awful TWC is. I'm from the Bronx...just moved to the Upper East Side in NYC where I have NO CHOICE but to get this nightmare.
Unionized...you know what that means...
Avoid at all costs. Stick with Cablevision, a non-Union company.
I wonder if they will piggyback WIFI on another carrier's service and dare claim wi-fi like they did with CV here.
| | | | Re: Awful Company since when is an MSO unionized? TWC prides them selves on NOT being union. | |
| | | | What does this have to do with 1) TW service in exactly the other end of the country and 2) the launch of a new service not anywhere near the Bronx? | |

| | WiFi Coverage .. covering more non-LA cities than LA itself It looks fine in 'Santa Monica, Hollywood', but actual parts of Los Angeles outside of the downtown 'core' eg. (San Fernando Valley) has no WiFi at all. Kinda useless. | |

| More Ado About Nothing The ala-carte passes cost $2.95/60 minutes, $6.95/24 hours, $19.95/week, and $49.95/month. A non-starter.
Probably delivers better throughput than other public WiFi options, but for my money, I'd be subscribing to the late, great Boingo @ $9.95/month.
Not sure what they were thinking. I guess it means some marginal coverage for a few folks in a few places, if the average TWC subscriber can get past the authentication screen.
| | | Remember the time what Earthlink Wifi did??? lol..... Kinda remind me of Earthlink Wifi (or Feather by Earthlink) Remember that? haha let hope it wont shut down like Earthlink WIFI did like 4-5years ago. | |

| | 1 edit | Re: So how do TWC subscribers use it? You're asked to log in using your @ca.rr.com email address and its password, but it's a major drag to try to do it on an iPhone.
Takes forever for the login screen to materialize and it isn't optimized for mobile devices. Tiny text fields and non-responsive radio buttons -- like they went out of their way to serve laptop customers only.
Once I jumped through those hoops, the net didn't connect at all. iPhone showed a checkmark next to the net, but no web access. Still, any time I'm within their coverage range a Safari login page self-opens, but seldom materializes. Really annoying unless you tell your iPhone to forget the network.
Signal is fairly strong from downtown to Venice, but unless you're on a full-sized browser it's difficult if not unusable. TWC is no help: "Time Warner Cable does not offer technical support for connecting devices to the Internet. Please refer to the user manual for your device should you require additional assistance."
