'Time Warner Cable News' Plan Meets Resistance
NY1 Watchers Think New Name's a Bad Idea
by Karl Bode Thursday 21-Mar-2013 tags: business · Time Warner Cable
Time Warner Cable owns a number of local news outlets in numerous cities, such as YNN in upstate NY, News 14 in the Carolinas, and NY1 in New York City. The company is now seeing some significant blowback for a decision to rename all of these news outlets "Time Warner Cable News." The change of NYC's long-time staple NY1 to such a heavily corporate name is seeing the heaviest criticism. One user calls the plan the "stupidest media rebranding scheme I’ve ever heard of." "Our research shows that people who watch our stations, such as NY1, are loyal viewers, yet most people don’t understand their connection to Time Warner Cable," the company said in a statement.

They could be like News 13.

rebranding is not always smart

People like the name of the channel already and you have what is important. loyal viewers. Loyal viewers are more important than making sure they know who owns the station.

TWC seems that it cannot grasp the meaning of brand identity.

What they should do is reach a middle ground and just remind during station identification "NY1 A Time Warner Company"

It stems from people not realizing that they can't get the channel without Time Warner Cable. Adding "A Time Warner Company" to the end of NY1 is neither accurate or enough. For one, it's a Time Warner Cable Company, not Time Warner and it doesn't really tell people that it can only be obtained by having TWC service.

Some people really like the TWC based news sources. Because they only just report the news. They don't put a spin on it that I've ever seen. And they show local traffic and weather so often that it makes it useful for a few minutes to most anyone.

It was so popular in the Charlotte Area, as News 14 Carolina, that a county in the area had bought out TWC to run the cable system themselves and many customers wondered where it was after the takeover. They didn't realize it was a TWC owned channel. So the county that runs the cable company in that county near Charlotte was begging TWC to be able to carry News 14. I don't know what happened with that.

I think Time Warner Cable wants people to know if they leave, they won't be getting NY1 or News 14, but they don't have a way of conveying that without blatantly saying it. Not sure changing the name totally to Time Warner Cable News is a great idea though.

Meh...who cares. I'm on FiOS now and when I did have TWC, I hardly ever watched NY1.

Yes, because you switched to FiOS and hardly watched NY1, no one else in the entire area cares.

disclaimer

branding can make or break a company image. it's smarter to push the labeling to a disclaimer type print (a time warner company) changing the brand to TWC news will get the pitifully low viewership to turn to NIL viewership seeing as most people dislike the value cable companies are offering these days with rate hikes and dismal competition.

I say let them do it...

Once people start to see that all the "news" is owned by the same two or three companies they will begin to realize what a farce media conglomeration has made of journalism and news reporting.

If they change the name in the NY Metro area, they can put it on another channel.

That only works when you have companies such as RayCom and others that own more than a few stations. TWC isn't that big yet with their stations. And when you are reporting local news, traffic and weather - its different than some national company just dropping in a 30minute "news" cast that is called "award winning" and "certified most accurate weather" and then showing national TV shows.

Where have you been? The handwriting about "PUBLIC INTEREST" has been watered down ever since Disney bought ABC/Capital Cities broadcasting in the 1990s. Since 2003, the media consolidation & propaganda's been taken to new levels never seen since the anti-communist era of McCarthyism.

What is one out of every 5 TV commercials about?

Drugs / Healthcare
Oil
Bank or Insurance Company
Car company

It's gotten so bad, that if you watch more than 4 hours of this stuff a day you will slowly be brainwashed even if you dislike these companies. Your perception of them will change in their favor.. My advice, don't watch it.. and definitely don't pay a cable-tv company to watch it.

TW1 possible

Love NY1 but if TWC insists on Big Bully technique why not at least do TW1 for a tie in. Best is to just let it stay.
But guess it's a New Coke thing with added advantage of diverting attention from TW limitations.
