Time Warner Cable Now Third Largest Broadband ISP
Cable carrier jumps past Verizon (albeit with a little Verizon help)...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 16-Feb-2010 tags: competition · business · cable · RoadRunner Cable · Time Warner Cable
Time Warner Cable today announced that the cable provider is now the nation's third-largest broadband ISP, having just passed the 9 million broadband subscriber mark. They seem to be working from trend projections: Time Warner Cable actually ended 2009 as the country's fourth biggest ISP, their earnings showing 8.9 million broadband subscribers to Verizon's reported 9.2 million customers. Both of course trail AT&T and Comcast, AT&T's earnings indicating that AT&T now serves 15.7 million customers, while Comcast's latest report shows Comcast with 15.9 million broadband users.

"This is a great milestone for Time Warner Cable, and it further proves that our customers enjoy the speed and content our HSD products deliver, as well as the value seen when bundling this service with our video and phone offerings," said Landel Hobbs, COO of Time Warner Cable.

Time Warner Cable and Mr. Hobbs were greatly helped by the fact that Verizon's all but giving up on rural DSL service, either selling or simply ignoring many of these Time Warner Cable markets. Instead, Verizon has made it clear they want to focus on wireless (especially LTE) service and more profitable FiOS markets.

Last we checked Verizon FiOS was available in less than 10% of Time Warner Cable's overall markets, and Time Warner Cable doesn't have to try very hard to lure subscribers that have grown tired of 7 Mbps (or often 3 Mbps or slower) DSL service.

Penetration of AT&T U-Verse is actually higher in Time Warner Cable markets -- approaching 20%. But AT&T's top broadband speeds max out around 24 Mbps at shorter loop lengths, and AT&T's been struggling to get line-bonded VDSL service working.

Once you realize that less than a third of Time Warner Cable's markets see any kind of real next-gen broadband competition (with Verizon's FiOS deployment outside of major cities essentially done for now and AT&T line bonding a perpetual no show), you start to understand why the company's been slower to upgrade to faster DOCSIS 3.0 technology. The faster speeds are only available in portions of New York City, with only 2,000 of Time Warner Cable's 9 million customers signed up for 50 Mbps service.

"High Speed Data continues to be a growing part of our business and we look to keep adding new features and further enhance speeds as we move through 2010," says Hobbs. Though Time Warner Cable has been slow on upgrades we expect several new market launches over the next month or two; one insider tells us faster "Wideband" service should soft launch in upstate New York in a matter of weeks, with a hard launch a month later. Localized upstate New York promotions would seem to confirm this.

Proof of enjoyment? Hardly.

More like proof that many will keep mediocre but sufficient service rather than hassle with switching. Or proof that there's only one option in many markets.

How about people tired of 7 Mbps TWC service?

Ya more like the ladder. If there was plenty of options I'm sure people would always gravitate towards the better service. Most markets don't have many options though.

I've had Road Runner since 2004 and haven't had anything slower then 8Mb since 2005 and have enjoyed 15Mb for the past 3 1/2 years now.

Always fast, always rock solid. There is no reason to switch when you're serviced by the best damn ISP in the country.

Well it all depends what's available. Like my 25/15 FiOS was just upgraded to 35/35, and I am paying slightly less (new package with different options) than I was before, and a lot less than if I had cable tv & broadband.

Re: Proof of enjoyment? Hardly.

I'm guessing you must have competition in the area you live?
Most of the rest of TWC's area has no real competition so it's a virtual monopoly.
I've been stuck with a 384k upload speed since RR came on the scene in 2000. Wow, 10 years and no change!

Re: Proof of enjoyment? Hardly.

You hit the nail on the head. Only significant competition motivates TWC. Hawaii has had 1mbps up over a year now. We had been on 384 also. The reason we got the very nice upgrade on upload speed was because the competition, HawaiianTel, had announced that they were now the fastest broadband in Hawaii with up to 11mbps down and 768kbps up for all customers. Oceanic TWC had 5ms down(standard) and 8ms down (Turbo on Oahu only) and 384kbps up (for both standard and Turbo) at the time of HawTel's announcement.

To not be outdone in the crucial advertising department, Oceanic gave all RR users a free upgrade to 1mbps up. To counter the 11mbps down that HawTel had announced, Oceanic created a new "Super Turbo" (again on Oahu only) and gave it 15mbps down. Almost no one, for about a year, could get it but Oceanic had it for a few customers in one area only of Oahu so they could counter HawTel's boast of being the fastest broadband in the state. Actually, Oceanic is even today the fastest ONLY on Oahu as on the neighbor islands, like the Big Island, HawTel is faster as it is possible to get 11mbps with them but no higher than 5mbps down with Oceanic.

It was amusing to watch this boasting contest unfold. HawTel made a big announcement and within 24 hours Oceanic had pushed the 1mbps up to all of us RR users and had, on paper, created the Super Turbo at 15mbps down and the next day the newspaper headlines were that Oceanic was again the fastest. Obviously, Oceanic could have given us the increased upload at any time since they did it almost instantly that means the capability was already there for some time, but it took COMPETITION for us to actually get it.

I'd just be happy to have a little more upstream and better balance across the neighborhood... speeds still suck during peak hours in my area, and my brother's 6 mbit dsl gets 768 up while my 7mbit twc "with powerboost" is capped at 512kbit/sec... sad.

Whaaa? 5mbps down is tops here and has been since January 2005 when all of RR moved to 5 down.

We are finally getting an increase at the END of this year to 10mbps down with no cost increase. I don't know if the neighbor islands will also finally get turbo or not. That is available currently only on Oahu. A tier 3 tech told me recently that the increase was to 8mbps down but that is not what the Oceanic VP of marketing has gone on record stating. However, I won't hold my breath that we will actually get 10 down until it happens...it more likely will be an upgrade to 8 down as the tier 3 tech told me. That will be welcome but it is too little and too late. Hawaii is getting left behind as far as broadband speeds go especially when currently there is nothing above 5ms down except on Oahu. DSL is faster here if you are near the CO, or remote terminal as even on this, and other neighbor islands, you can get 11mbps down. My friend switched several years ago from RR to DSL and he gets MORE THAN TWICE the speed I get on RR for LESS MONEY. I can't get DSL or I would have switched (assuming I was not at the end of receptivity meaning a very low DSL speed) even though HawTel has many, many problems...the package with them would save me a LOT of money.

Third largest? ... they should not be proud..

...they should be ashamed.

TWC, for their size, should be on more of the cutting edge of things. They need to be dumping a large amount of money into DS3 services.. Comcast is aggressive to have DS3 deployed to their entire foot print by this year, and TWC has a measly system or two with some available..

So yea.. while they're the 3rd largest, they shouldn't be proud of that - at all.

3rd largest in the amount of customers, not speed or anything else.

What do you mean when you say they should be dumping a large amount of money int DS3 services. DS3s for who, the customer or do you mean DS3s in their back-end infrastructure?

Time Warner Internet is a joke.

When I had it, it went down more then a ten dollar prostitute. My neighbors that have it still lose it an average of 2-3 days a month-and much of the time it's on it runs at less that half the speeds they pay for. Several of my friends followed my lead and got DSL. Though on paper it's slower, in the TW world they really aren't much faster most of the time-and DSL is FAR more reliable. TW still claims their troubles are caused by taking over Adelphia-fellas you took them over here almost FOUR YEARS AGO-that excuse is really OLD!

I've had Internet with Cox, Comcast and TW and by FAR Time Warner is the worst of the three.

A friend of a friend is a Time Warner head end tech. and admitted to me that they are WAY understaffed and WAY oversubscribed-both decisions that were made at the top.
He even told me that he had a POTS line for his phone service, because he wouldn't want to have to rely on TW's phone service in a family emergency. He considers it much too unreliable.

It is fast...

Even though they skimp people here in Ohio on the upload, I can't complain about my download speeds. I have the turbo tier which is 15 down/768 up and I love it. Powerboost usually bumps me up to 2.1 Mb/s, and then throttles back down to 1.8 Mb/s for my max connection rate. There's no caps and I've easily pushed 600 GB in one month of questionable files and not once have they notified us about high usage...

My node doesn't seem to be very busy or is well maintained because I can achieve max speed at all times during the day. Ping times are great.

They get a lot of beef but I've used them for awhile and barley ever get downtime...and when we do it's either planned or understandable.
