Time Warner Cable Offering Free TV to Some Users
Standalone Broadband Customers Get Free TV If they Get 50 Mbps Tier
by Karl Bode Wednesday 12-Sep-2012 tags: prices · business · bandwidth · cable · Time Warner Cable
A new Time Warner Cable promotion being mailed to customers in some markets involves offering stand alone broadband customers a free year of television if their upgrade their broadband speeds. As Janko Roettgers at GigaOM notes, the promotion is particularly unique because the company, which likes to underplay the relevance of Netflix at every opportunity, aims the promotion at Netflix users they claim will benefit from increased broadband speeds. Time Warner Cable has also been a heavy proponent of usage-based billing, something that doesn't work well for heavy Netflix users. The promotion encourages standalone broadband customers to upgrade to the company's 50 Mbps top tier ($100 a month for most users) to get the year of free television service.

Grrrr...

Is tempting to upgrade to this. We have Extreme with just digital cable and 3 boxes. The other option of this promo is "Ultimate Internet + Digital TV" for $139.99 + plus the cost of our extra boxes which looks like it should work out to the same cost and give me 50 MBits. Wonder if they would let existing customers sign on to this.

EDIT- Buggers. Can't have cable already.

Re: Grrrr...

So the market for this is:

1. People who think they need 50 Mbps service, who do not already have pay TV service.

2. People who don't really need 50 Mbps but are morally opposed to paying "extra" for TV service.

3. People whose employer would have no trouble reimbursing them for home internet service but wouldn't pay for TV service.

Since I have the 10 Mbps service, doesn't it seem reasonable that they would give me just a few channels, at least?

Odd

I've had free TV from them for the past 7 years, ordered it when they were still Comcast in my area, disconnected after it became TWC, have called TWC countless times since, and the last manager I spoke too said "We aren't going to spend that much in gas for a technician to come out and disconnect a wire, just enjoy free service until it eventually happens" I guess in some markets they just don't care?

Somebody pointed out in one of the forums here, a few years back, that there was currently a federal law on the books providing for liability or prosecution (I can't recall whether it was civil or criminal, but I suspect it was just civil) when a person merely has cable TV with the knowledge that they are not paying for it.

I couldn't believe it but they cited chapter and verse, and sure enough, there it was, although it's anybody's guess whether it's every been enforced in this sort of situation or what the result was.

So, you might want to get that in writing or at least ask for an audio recording of the call.

Re: Odd

What that is for is cable theft, active, and passive.. the active part being you help yourself and setup service, or passive: you didn't hook it up [at the pole, box etc.] and had it connected to your tvs.

Usually, however, they will catch this if they do a cable audit in your neighborhood however.

TWC NEO/WPA gives you free cable. Sign up for Internet and get free TV. Techs even tell you this.

Wish we had some of that here. I get nothing but the 411 channel and some other nonsense.

The problem is that it read like it was written by a cable lobbyist.

What if you called for disconnect and they failed to do so? What if an employee failed to put the proper filters on the line?

There would be no records to exculpate the accused in these passive cases where an agent of the cable company failed to do their job, which amounts to making the defendant prove their innocence. That's not how things are supposed to work here in the land of Mom, apple pie and the Easy Rider Rifle Rack, are they?

Sure, if TWC's pricing is anythign like Comcasts.. the 50mbit tier is going to be around $70+ a month and "FREE" is a very dirty word the way companies use it these days.. "FREE" doesn't give you a complimentary cable box rental (or three), doesn't include the franchise fees and taxes, or a truck roll to install..

As it is, they're about to piss off customers with their 6 strikes plan soon.. so trying to get customers onboard with buying content is the best they can do?!? Hah!

Maybe if it was 100/65 megabits (uncapped), for $70 with "free" tv.. it might turn some heads.. 50? Nah..

Re: Fail

Does TWC require boxes for HD? I know WOW Internet and Cable doesn't...

If I qualified, I'd probably jump on it, seeing as how I still watch all my television on old SDTVs because I really have no problem with the quality. It also costs less.

Re: Fail

AFAIK, yes, you do need a box for most HD channels. The exception, is your locals, which are Clear-QAM per FCC. If you don't have a box, you will get the analog channels (they are going to phase analog out eventually) which are in SD plus the Clear QAM local HD stations.

Re: Fail

some systems also have WGN A HD in Clear QAM as well.

@nycourts.gov
Are you sure about this? I returned my cable box last year after dropping down to basic cable, and for a while I was getting the locals like you said (though they kept on moving them around [four times in two months] and it was a pain to actually find them), until they did one more change and then I couldn't get any hd channels. When I called to complain, TWC NYC indicated that non HD channels were Clear QAM but FCC regs did not apply to hd; I found a post somewhere on these forums which seemed to confirm this and if I remember correctly it actually cited to the appropriate regs. I then threatened to cancel my TV service so they gave me a hd box for a year for free (which I just returned as the year has expired).

The Free may just be the local OTA stuff + the PSA channel and maybe QVC, WGN A, CNN, TBS, C-SPAN.

Agreed. I pay around $50 for 50/25 with FIOS, which is way more reliable anyways.

How did you get 50/25 for $50? That price is usually reserved for part of a triple pay pkg- NOT stand-alone.

"free" + box rental + fees

I got this offer in the mail, plus the identical one a few months back which included upgrading to the 30 Mbps tier in addition to the 50 Mbps tier. Yay, I can get just the local broadcast channels if I want to pay the mandatory $10/mo box rental plus any and all "fees" and taxes they add, and those channels will NOT be in HD.

*yawn*

No thanks.

Re: TV?

I want in on this (maybe)
I have internet and phone only from TW. Does that count for anything?
And, as asked, what kind of TV service do you get in this offer? Only basic?
