Every market should be updated by the end of the year
(old news - 07:14PM Thursday Jul 31 2008)
tags: bandwidth · cable · RoadRunner Cable
A Time Warner Cable insider contacted me to note that Time Warner Cable will be launching Powerboost technology in Desert Cities and San Diego, California tomorrow. Powerboost more than doubles the speed of a user's connection during the first few minutes of a large download. While some call the technology a gimmick used to game speed tests, Powerboost is popular among most customers. Time Warner Cable just got done launching the service in New York City and Texas, and a Time Warner Cable spokesman recently told me that every market should be upgraded by the end of 2008. Unlike the Comcast and Cox implementations of Powerboost, Time Warner Cable's version only impacts downstream speeds -- for the moment.

TW's website? San Diego gets 10/1 Standard, 15/2 Turbo.

Most of "SoCal" (LA Area) is 6/512 standard and 10/1 Turbo.

Woot

Honestly Any upgrade is great imo Not to mention I'm in san diego so it's great new's. Thank you Karl been waiting for new's of anything.

Then again it's still a gimmick but heck most of my downloads up to 600 mb's only last 3 minutes or so so I might be able to game their speeds regardless

Hmmm...

Will we get PermaBoost if we're on an underutilized node? I live in a neighborhood of mostly elderly. Would love to see what happens in my area once this goes through.

Re: Hmmm...

The same as if your in a place full of youth, 38 is the max period, so I doubt your ever going to reach that and at the end it's only 1-2 minutes worth. Not complaining here but upgrading the actual perm speeds would be good as well I'd wish if the upload was uncapped and boosted more then this

Several minutes of Power Boost sounds pretty good for cable

Several minutes of Power Boost sounds pretty good. When I had Comcast for INternet, they had 30mbs Powerboost but it only lasted around 20 seconds, then it would drop back down to 8mbs.

From the article. "...Powerboost more than doubles the speed of a user's connection during the first few minutes of a large download.."

Several is three or more and he listed minutes meaning more than one. And if he meant two minutes it would have been two or a couple so it's 3 or more minutes which is several or a few.

Turbo needed?

Do you have to have Turbo? I have the $54.95 standalone RR which clocks in at around 7mbit/400kb (advertised 5/384). I live in Texas and have seen no powerboost yet. Of course... I *am* in Beaumont, which is where RR has decided to cr** on its users.....

Just wondering if powerboost is something I should ever expect or not.

Doesnt matter

In a year I bet they will implement caps so this will be mute. They should quit focusing on increasing speed if they dont have pipe to send it through.

boost

@rcn.com

faster

powerboost may be good enough for san diego but not new york :-p

we want 50mpbs!

Not in NYC (for me at least)

I am not receiving PowerBoost, and I live in NYC. In fact I have reset my cable modem a number of times over the past few months and I am still getting the same 5M/512k that I have been getting for years. In fact, I heard that around a year or two ago they supposedly upgraded everyone in the city to 7Mbps or 10Mbps tier, but apparently not me!

Dunno if it's a "PowerBoost" but

I am getting a little more speed. 15/2 connection.

so it may be more than a minute. it might infact be a 'few'

the fine print:

PowerBoost up to 22 Mbps claim is based on Road Runner Turbo's standard maximum download speed of 15 Mbps. Actual speeds may vary. Not all service tiers are available in all areas. Many factors affect speed. Road Runner Turbo with PowerBoost provides a burst of download speed when capacity is available above the customer’s provisioned download speeds for the first 10 MB of a file. It then reverts to your provisioned speed for the remainder of the download. PowerBoost is a registered trademark of Comcast Corporation. Used with Permission. © 2008 Time Warner Cable Inc.
