Time Warner Cable Says 300 Mbps 'Maxx' Austin Upgrades Complete

As we've recently noted, Austin is starting to resemble the kind of competitive market most of us only dream about. Thanks to Google Fiber, AT&T is now planning to offer $70, 1 Gbps connections in the city -- recently joined by Grande Communications, who says they too will offer 1 Gbps lines for $65 a month. Not to be outdone, Time Warner Cable also joined the fun, announcing last February they'd be bringing 300 Mbps to all of their users in Austin.

In a new blog post this week, Time Warner Cable's Ryan Kelly states that the company's upgrades in Austin have been completed, well before Google Fiber even comes to market.

"Starting today, we can now say every customer we serve in and around Austin has access to our latest Internet speeds up to six times faster than before – and more importantly – at no additional cost," notes Kelly.

Time Warner Cable is marketing these faster speeds as "Maxx," and has been deploying them in Austin and portions of Los Angeles and New York City. Back in August the company announced they'd also be deploying the service, which costs $108 per month standalone, to users in Charlotte, Dallas, Hawaii, Kansas City, Raleigh, San Antonio and San Diego sometime in 2015.

Time Warner Cable, previously on record insisting there's no demand for 1 Gbps speeds, has also promised that they'll start delivering a 1 Gbps offering in Los Angeles starting sometime in 2016.

Still not competitive

So, after Google Fiber and AT&T are offering symmetrical gigabit for $70 a month and Grande is offering it for $65, TWC is only offering 300/20 for $65...and that's a promotional rate. The 'regular' rate is over $100. Is this a joke?
