Time Warner Cable Strikes Deal With Al Jazeera
Time Warner Cable, Bright House Communications and Al Jazeera have finally struck a distribution deal, the first new deal since the news channel was started. Time Warner Cable took significant heat back in January for dumping Current TV from their channel lineup after the channel was bought by Al Jazeera to be converted into a news outlet, with critics accusing the cable operator of making a political statement (something they repeatedly denied). Al Jazeera says they're in talks with other cable operators; they're currently in a legal fight with AT&T after the telco dropped the channel from their U-Verse TV lineup.

Well...

Now to watch the comments roll about how TWC customers are going to cancel services due to this. Figure that will be the theme

Glad I live in a Comcast region. TWC service must be pretty awful, their customers pretty much use anything a reason to threaten to cancel their service!

Re: Well...

I'm glad Comcast is carrying it some places, but my area isn't one of them because we're on a 650mhz plant, and apparently all the old show re-run and 500 different sports channels are higher priority than AJE.

..people dropping service...

Oh dear god, a channel I dont like. I will terminate my service and continue only watching 100% trustworthy, American news channels. After all, they never lie. Fox, MSNBC, and CNN are the pinnacle of reporting quality. We must never allow these terrorist, communist, anti-american nazi channels on our patriotic telecommunications systems.
Muh Freedoms.

/sarcasm

I dont even watch Al Jazeera much, but if people get so angry over a TV channel their priorities are really screwed up. (Arent there more important things to worry about?)

If the thought of getting news from anywhere that is not a lapdog of the USA (Arab/Asian/Russian/European sources) makes you panic and run, continue to believe everything you are told.

I am glad Comcast provides a selection of international news channels for their viewers. They cant be big money earners, but it gives those of us that want to, an opportunity to see the world viewpoint, and potentially avoid Republicrat/Dempublican propaganda.

Yes. Al Jazzera English has some extremely good broadcasting, especially around International and ecological news. Debates over such topic as Religion and Science. In-depth reports, like the full hour last night about the U.S. wild fires, their ecological costs, their cause, forest management policy, how they are fought, and how communities deal with their destructivity. You will never see such a piece on any US tv channel! It requires an attention-span of more than a 30 second American sound-byte.

While all the dumbed-down US news channels were perseverating over Anthony Weiner's weiner, Al Jazzera was broadcasting actual news about Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Africa, the EU's financial troubles, and Iran's nuclear program. Real news about what was going on in the real world.

There is not a single U.S. news channel, which covers International news except superficially. Al Jazzera and BBC are the only broadcast news sources aimed at mentalities higher than stupid 12 year olds; and we wonder why we are such an ignorant provincial country?

I don't own a TV, never had cable, so when AJ ceased online broadcasting to the US a month or so ago, I picked up a Canadian VPN to be able to get them.

Nothing wrong with having the widest variety of propaganda available. That way, you can actually decide for yourself where the truth really lies, rather than be programmed with talking points from your hardline "pundit" of choice.

Cool it with the question marks. They make you appear immature and hot headed. I for one am happy to have foreign news sources available. I find domestic news to be too focused on celebrity news, too simplistic, or too sensationalist to be taken seriously. It seems like things are only mentioned on CNN/FOX/MSNBC if they involve blood & guts, R vs. D, or the latest terrorism/child rapist/plane crash fear story. CNN's re launched Crossfire show was particularly ironic when they had a discussion (shouting match) on the causes of low quality political discourse, on a show that frames everything as hyper partisan conflict.

i'm a jewish zionist and i won't drop twc because of al.jazeera. i'm sure their programmers are smart enough not to show american audiences the more polarizing content making it's way around the middle east. i also think al.jazeera will help reduce the amount of islamaphobia you see here in america.

besides - twcable is a monopoly where i live, so trying to make some political statement by dropping service is counter productive.

better to use their service to better voice your displeasure with this decision and produce and distribute your own content that rebuts anything you see on al.jazeera you feel needs correction. the internet and media should never be about stifling any one opinion:fact you don't agree with, rather to use the internet and media to debate that opinion:fact head on.

The cable operators dropped the channel before it actually switched over to Al Jazeera. They didn't do it because of people protesting the channel, if anything people were threatening to drop service because they wanted the channel and the cable operators weren't providing it.

Not impartial

Al Jazeera is owned by a government, so they are going to present the news with a slant favorable to their government. But of course in the U.S. the news is presented as determined by the rich companies that own the news outlets. There's probably no impartial news agency around anymore; they can't afford it.

Personally I think all of the news is biased and not fully honest, so I don't really trust any of them.

Al Jazeera

I wonder how much they had to pay Time Warner Cable to carry the channel. Pulling in ratings of 0 would make me thing it is not a highly sought network by consumers.

Not sure if sarcasm, but...channels don't pay cable operators to be carried, it's the other way around.

Not unless your HSN, QVC, ShopNBC or the countless others. They do pay, especially to be on every cable package.

'Significant Heat'

I had to laugh at Karl's typical anti cable jab. 'Time Warner Cable took significant heat back in January for dumping Current TV from their channel lineup after the channel'. I didn't see any 'Significant Heat' in the linked thread and the responses fell into the categories of 1) Don't Care 2) Never new the channel existed 3) Keep the terrorist network out of the US

While I am appalled TW is bring this channel aboard, I wish I could hide it from the guide like I do with DirecTV. Both Al Jaterrorist and RTTV have no place in this country and I wish I could remove them from my guide

Perhaps you should ask Sean Hannity, he may be able to help you figure out a way to hide it from your guide.

Nope, and never will. I only watch Fox News. I will not watch that terrorist propaganda network. Those 'people' attacked us once on 9/11/01 and again on 4/15/13. Fuck them! Fuck them to hell, may their 72 virgins kick their asses!

Besides if you don't like any news channels, or whatever channels on your line-up, just turn on Parental Control and set up blocking parameters.

Oh dear. While I generally believe in similar political views as you, your attitude epitomizes all that is wrong with this country. You are clearly parroting talking points that others have put into your head without even attempting to apply some critical thinking. I feel sorry for you and those like you who prefer to wallow in hatred based entirely on what others have told you. Had you taken the time to view the channel, you may well have come to the same conclusions. I can respect that. Basing one's opinion entirely on what someone told you to say is just very sad.

Those that have no knowledge of history or the basics of politics make for great string puppets. The lack of a proper education, becomes clearly evident, once these puppets express their views in a public forum. Very sad indeed.

Ten years overdue but still happy AJ is getting some carriage

About time a terrestrial distributor broke ranks and let Americans have access to a major global news player. Free press my ass.

You guys act like this is a political statement

I think Time Warner is probably coming out ahead on this deal just like when they pick up other channels with no ratings. That is they are getting paid to put it in their lineup. It's just like when your android phone is bundled with crapware you cannot remove.

Time Warner should add The Blaze Network

Personally, I won't watch Al Jazeera when it becomes available. I would like to see Time Warner cable add the Blaze Network since I would watch on a regular basis.
