Time Warner Cable to Double Wi-Fi Hotspots in 2013
With a Heavy Emphasis on the New York City market

Speaking about their earnings this week, Time Warner Cable announced that the company will be doubling their existing Wi-Fi footprint this year, with a heavy emphasis on their New York City markets. At the moment, Time Warner Cable has roughly 10,000 Wi-Fi access points, the majority of them in Los Angeles. This year's focus will likely be primarily on New York City, where they'll have ample competition from Google and Boingo who already offer free Wi-Fi in many locations. Time Warner Cable already offers Wi-Fi in several parks, though they only offer free Wi-Fi for a half an hour before charging.

Lots of spots in SoCal

In LA - they have a LOT of Wifi - probably more coverage than most ever would use, and keeps many from requiring a cell plan on a tablet.

Re: Lots of spots in SoCal

Indeed, there is a lot of coverage near commercial boulevards.
But connectivity and signal quality varies widely.

With a good connection, 15/1 is common.

Really? Of all the times I've checked for wifi availability, I've only seen TWC wifi show up once. I stumble across AT&T much more frequently (usually due to a Starbucks).

I'm not sure what the point of investing in wifi is. TWC would be much wiser to spend their efforts on their cable system. Their LA HD lineup is still a total joke and they're still running Comcast's iGuide software from 2004.

Meh

So far I have not been that impressed with the ones in KC. They connect about 1/3 of the time and when they do the speeds are only good enough to lightly browse on a tablet.

Re: who cares?

Maybe that's what they are doing.

Building a mesh network to bypass their lame hybrid coax fiber network.

Re: who cares?

probably more likely to push a deal to many 'urban dwellers' (NYC) where they wouldn't want to pay the extra $20-$30/month for limited data over cellular.

Maybe their long term is to partner with a cellular provider (aren't they hitching up with VZW?). It'd give AT&T a run for their money, and reduce the cost of overages, and give them some clickstream cash.

Here in Socal, TWC is the only entity that does, all the while prices have come down or remain flat.

We've on our third upgrade of the cable plant in a decade.

This most likely wouldn't help you. Especially if they're putting the APs on the cable lines along the street.

Yeah, if it is a big outage. Sometimes, I do have small ones.
