Instead these "Stupid users", as you put it. Should be fined heavily for intentional use of a spam/spyware/botnet based operating system. With the additional punishment of installing, from scratch (no slip streaming allowed, or images) Win2k on a brand spanking new machine. No driver disks allowed, run all updates and they must do it in 2 hours time and achieve network connectivity.

They will be "Re-infected" within the first 10 minutes of connecting Win 2000 to broadband.
I work at a small PC repair shop, and a majority of the customers we get have the Fake Anti-virus usuall (PC tools, Antivirus 2009, ect ect) Which we only recommend a "Nuke and Pave" installing only the OS (no older then XP) , updates, drivers, and AVG and Firefox....that's it.
Most of the customers don't even know they are infected, and they think the FAKE anti-virus is a real program.
Furthermore, how can you prove that the customer knew he was infected???
Some bots are not as obvious and run in the background.

They will be "Re-infected" within the first 10 minutes of connecting Win 2000 to broadband. The way to install an Operating System from scratch is to wipe the drive, install the system from a CD/DVD followed by installing the updates and Virus Programs from CD/DVD disks (the updates being downloads written to the CD-R/DVD-R or pressed copies issued by the Publisher). Only THEN do you actually hook the machine to the Internet (since it should now be protected and up-to-date).
I do this for Macs for people in my user group without fast connctions (the updates can be downloaded and then applied offline) and I assume that Windows Updates can also be downloaded and the downloads applied offline.

According to the news release suspected computers were clean. The attackers must have used hacked modems with stolen MAC addresses hooked illegally to TWC's network.
I hope TWC learns from this experience.
|
| | | | Re: Spoof No, if it was "stolen" MAC addresses, they would still have a unique IP that could be tracked down to a node. And easily shut off at the CMTS if they want.
And then you can track it down house by house by disconnecting the coax from the tap until the IP goes offline. Then you've found who is using a hacked modem with a stolen MAC address.

|
| | the truth that BINDs you A) welcome to the causality of caps and causality of Hollywood control mister isp B) troubling is the fact ISPS actually spied back on these people when simply telling them "your infected" now clean it or we shut you down C) they get any kinda of sympathy when it is them and the rest of there chain including rogers that will illegally break laws about scanning WELL before they were allowed too. YES i once went to work and had designed my own firewall and was testing it forgot to turn it off. rogers scanned me 653 times in a 5 hr period and when they could not get through this same practice occurred , SHUT DOWN.
Ya see they were pushing firewall software that later came out to have a hole in it like xp has many.
ALSO is this storey true totally was all of these people doing what they say or did they use this as an excuse to go spy on a few other people.
DO you trust media and them , after all its is all the same people.

| | | Re: NOT over said by Mele20:I don't think it is over. If it was over I would be back to four DNS servers. I still have 248 DNS servers. Why does the having the extra capacity available mean the attacks are NOT over? Just because the attach went away doesn't mean the network change to improve performance and capacity had to.
Beyond going after the attackers and shutting them down, it seems TWC beefed up their DNS capacity to handle a lot more DNS requests at once making a DNS DDoS alot harder to do.
Weren't users complaining of poor DNS performance BEFORE these attacks started anyway? This solution probably solved much of that too.
Now if they could only move them pack to Orange so my query time is 10-15ms instead of 80+.
