Time Warner Jacks Rates Up to 17.6% in Los Angeles
As Company Launches Regional Dodgers Sports Network
Time Warner Cable has informed Los Angeles area residents that they'll be seeing price hikes as high as 17.6% on broadband and television services. According to the Los Angeles Times, the cost of local channels will jump 17.6%, to $20 from $17 a month, while the cost of a DVR rental will rise 18.6%, to $12.99 from $10.95. Local consumer advocates argue that Time Warner Cable is just cushioning the blow of their recent plan to launch a regional sports channel dedicated to the Dodgers. The company has a strained relationship with LA locals after horribly bumbling the Adelphia takeover back in 2007.

real reason for rate hikes??

LA TWC claims rate hikes for a $7 billion yearly sport channel

SATX TWC claims more upcoming HD channels and faster internet speeds.

so what is the real reason? why not just say they need to grow quarterly profits by raising rates

Re: real reason for rate hikes??

Real reason is for both, I work for TWc SoCal, and while we did sign a agreement with the Dodgers, with the other providers wanting access, that will partially pay off the cost of the agrement. Also, there are other network cost, ESPN (Disney) wants a arm and a leg, and so do other channels. It's a trickle down effect...

Re: real reason for rate hikes??

and what of the ad revenue generated off this channel which of/is more then enough to pay for its programing costs?

in SATX what is the real reason?? if most everyone in all markets overpays for a internet speed tiers based on actual usage.

so i again say/ask what is the real reason?

why not take that $7 billion and invest in and or TRAIN employees,
upgrade/fix/repair equipment

They're not in business to break even. Do you work for your employer only to live paycheck to paycheck?

Re: real reason for rate hikes??

LOL!!!!!!

a ten year $7 trillion investment in training and repairing/upgrading equipment would net them a much LARGER profit margin then the profit generated from ad revenue for one channel in that 10 year time frame.

so you demand upto 20% quarterly pay increase??

a HUGE chunk of the US population live paycheck to paycheck

The majority of Americans today live pay check to pay check.

Before you say it, anyone in IT who has some attitude of I'm fine, so screw the other people; well I hate to bring bad news but your job is actually the easiest to outsource today.

Therefore, I wouldn't be thinking screw you to anyone. Those that cannot be outsourced, they just bring in folks on h1b visas to replace you.

Anyone who is living pay check to pay check should not be paying a monthly triple-play $100+ every month. I was one of those people back when I was younger and lived on an aerial antenna and a $20/month pay as you go cell phone.

Why don't they put those channels (ESPN/Disney and Dodgers) into a separate tier.

I don't care for either set, yet I'm being extorted into paying it.

I hear you. I'm in SoCal and I could careless about baseball here. Now TWC wants me to pay for this channel/network I don't need? FU TWC!

17+ percent rate hike?

Who in their right mind really thinks the Dodgers are worth even a portion of that rate hike on EVERYONE in that market? Who thinks that jacking the wallets open of ALL their customers to pay for questionable programming at best is to be allowed? It's always the same story with these people; "You take what we offer in our bundles and pay us what we want" The bundles are nothing but rehashed shopping channels infomercial station multiple reruns of college football, soccer and reality"trash" channels. The quality programming is costly and NOT included or offered except in the higher priced bundles. I guess an a la carte system of customers able to choose what they watch is too costly (for the cable provider) and certainly too risky for the likes of Disney etc that produce their "entertainment"

I used to get on people here for stating "Just quit"

but with these hikes, they may be right.

I have always felt that I really did need TV both for me and my wife's entertainment and other family reasons....but with the internet and growth of non-cable programming....maybe we don't need TV cable packages anymore.

There are limits as to what we will spend and we have almost reached that point.

My favorite reply has always been "pffbt, it's just $x.xx a month, a cup of coffee (or whatever)".

At what point do you say a cup of coffee here, a doughnut there, a car payment over there is enough?

THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

These must be the official talking points of the industry. As I too hear this nonsense all the time.

All those cups of store bought coffee and snacks start to add up after a month or two and stretch that out to years and you have a HUGE chuck of change that most consumers simply can't afford to waste anymore.

NOTE TO CLUELESS EXECUTIVE MANGLEMENT....

THE ECONOMY STILL SUCKS FOR MOST CONSUMERS TODAY!

The same with Buckeye Cable in Toledo, OH. Started dropping channels and rates went up. Nothing changed but a smaller line up. They ended up in a heated court battled with RayCom Media over a contract issue with a Fox Station and a CBS station that RayCom owns in TOL after a month long battle, and both losing money, Buckeye agreed to bring the channel back and more $$$ out of the customers pocket. In the end lost 3 other local regional Fox Stations - Detroit and Cleveland and 5 other channels, only to put more $$ into their half baked "local sports network" that looks like its filmed in the President's basement.

I used to have them back in the day when the box was 5 and dvr was 10. Went to only internet and that was 30$. I got fed up with them when they raised the prices over the projected 12month intro price. 52.99 for 10/1mbs? Really TWC? Now I have clear for internet and is decent, and OTA TV. CozyTV, thisTV, antena, METV, PBS, and few others are awesome. Better quality TV then TLC's Honey BUBU

Just getting frustrated at Time Warner's continued price increases for everything. So I called and cancelled the showtime channel that I never watched anyways that was costing me $15 a month so the rep says ok your bill is not $129 so from $140 that is only $11 off, So I asked him why is it only $11 he informs me that they just had another increase that's why!! So yeah it's like a car payment here and not a coffee anymore... Looking into switching to satellite service.
