Time Warner 'Open' to HBO Bundled With Broadband, Not Much Else
by Karl Bode 09:27AM Thursday Sep 26 2013
HBO and Time Warner have repeatedly stated that you shouldn't hold your breath if you're waiting for a standalone HBO streaming option that doesn't require you have a traditional cable and HBO subscription. As the company has stated previously, they simply don't see the numbers working in their favor, despite the massive piracy seen of HBO shows like "Game of Thrones."

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia conference this week, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes acknowledged that Time Warner might be "open" to bundling HBO Go with a broadband service.

Bewkes however then immediately proceeded to shoot down every television evolution consumers have been clamoring for, from alternative video efforts from the likes of Sony, Intel, Apple and Google to lower rates. Bewkes also doubted the ability of the Internet to handle video for good measure.

"I’m a little skeptical about whether that's really going to happen and be done in a healthy way that can take the traffic that used to be on the interstate, which is what you are doing on your TV, and move it over," Bewkes told conference attendees. He also proclaimed that the rise in over the top video would occur simultaneously with a shift to metered broadband and higher broadband rates for consumers.

Also pooh pooh'd was the idea of cable TV needing to lower rates to avoid being more susceptible to Internet video, something analysts have been proclaiming for several years now. Instead, the CEO used a cup of Starbucks coffee as a relative example of cable's value.

"You paid more for that than you paid for the best TV for your entire family on God knows how many devices. It’s $3 a day. You don’t think that’s a deal?" Bewkes also took time out to ridicule cable operators complaining of soaring programming and retransmission fee rates. "If you look at their earnings, you know that they have a healthy business," proclaimed the CEO.

He looks like the unholy spawn

of a union between Robert Redford and Brad Pitt.

He's also delusional.

Like the buggy whip salesman in 1900.

Xfinity Blast Plus

Comcast basically already has HBO bundled with internet. Blast Plus is only $5 more than the plain Blast internet tier, yet includes HBO, Streampix and 45 cable channels. Technically it is a cable/internet bundle, but you're getting a lot for that extra $5.

Re: Xfinity Blast Plus

I have the Blast Plus bundle from Comcast. It is an awesome deal. The Internet is 50/10. It does have HBO, Streampix, and the Economy Tv package all for $69.99 (12 month Promo). Regular Price is $79.99.

Re: Xfinity Blast Plus

Are you SURE the "FREE" HBO isn't just a promo that you're on now?
On our (local) price lists for Blast Plus, it includes everything you guys mentioned - but has NEVER included HBO whatsoever...

Re: Xfinity Blast Plus

Well there you go...but that being said, that's not a bad deal - considering that (we) only have 2 linear HBO HD channels left on our system, that's about all HBO is would be worth to me. (the On-Demand HD stuff doesn't mean much to me)
I certainly would NEVER pay CC "rack rates" for that paltry of HBO lineup...

Re: Xfinity Blast Plus

The TV portion of the Blast Plus package works great for getting behind the walled garden of online TV "Authentication". Just Airplay to the Apple TV and you have it..
The outdated cable box that I received from Comcast is not even hooked up.

Really??? That is a good deal I only have one choice for and ISP and that bundle right there would be something like $150 a month. I would get that in a heart beat.

Where I'm from (Chicago market), this is actually cheaper than the standalone Blast price ($72.99).

He's right about one thing

His comparison of cable to a cup of Starbucks coffee is spot on. Both are grossly overpriced.

And both are a consumer choice, don't like the value? walk away.

I have. Cut the cord 4 years ago and buy my coffee at Dunkin Donuts. Somehow the word "value" and cable TV or Starbucks don't mesh.

Blind to reality...

He can only bury his head in the sand for so long. Eventually he will have to come to the reality that things are changing. If not, eventually there won't be a HBO to speak of.

As long as 20 million people a month are paying for HBO he doesn't have anything to worry about.

CEO acting like CEO

Typical CEO mindset. Milk your customers for all you can. Lock them in and build walls. If profits drop just raise prices. Eventually someone smarter comes along and takes your market. By then he'll be gone and retired with $$$$ in the bank.
Very few CEO really innovate.

Re: CEO acting like CEO

Of course. Innovation is, by its nature, risky, and most companies are risk-averse. Sure, innovation makes sense in the long run, but many investors are only interested in today, and there isn't a wolf at their door today. Of course, that wolf can show up rather quickly, and he can be very, very hungry. The folks at Blockbuster could probably comment on that.

OK so bundle with broadband

Since you need broadband to watch HBOGO I'm not seeing the issue.

Re: OK so bundle with broadband

As I understand...they want it bundle with broadband...so you & me will have to pay higher broadband monthly fees.....but whether you or me use hbogo is not important anymore....& HBO gets their money.

In TV...atleast HBO is not forced down to us...& we have the option to pay or not.
