Time Warner Sheds Time Warner Cable
Guess we'll just call you 'cable' now?
by Karl Bode Thursday 22-May-2008 tags: business · cable · RoadRunner Cable
Tipped by chelman See Profile
Time Warner this week unveiled their plan to spin off their 85% stake in Time Warner Cable, creating a separate cable company. An expected move that should have little impact on subscribers, the deal delivers a $9 billion dividend to Time Warner, and was aimed at helping Time Warner shed its $34.6 billion debt load. As its own company, Time Warner Cable Could be freer to pursue lustful acquisitions (like Cablevision), but the dividend they're paying their former master saddles them with "significant debt" according to the Wall Street Journal. Somebody needs a new name and logo.

How about calling it AOL Cable? It's about as good as AOL dial-up.

Re: Happy Days!!

Well, it's technically the same company...

But if they were going to rename it AOL cable you think they'd have done it immediately after the AOL Time Warner merger, when the AOL name was seen as a good thing (as unthinkable as it seems now).

Re: Happy Days!!

They would never name it after the dying AOL brand. Give it 5 more years and it will be completely dead.

Re: Happy Days!!

Hell, even AOL is now trying to kill the AOL brand- they recently released a statement saying that future sites they start will not use AOL in their name, after their marketers determined that most people associated it with dial-up internet, which was not exactly what they were looking for.

Amen to that. Some of these self styled "experts" would bitch having to be hung with the proverbial new rope.

Comcast is in talks with the shareholders to buy the TWX then.

...for now...

That said, if TWC were to ever fall to Comcrap, i'd happily send my money to ATT or VZ instead.

All TWC has to do is threaten bankruptcy, and a bailout package negotiated between Comcast and congressional commities will over ride that 30%, people can't be without TV right?

Hm, they did try to buy Disney once, so it's not too farfetched... but TWX still has the albatross of AOL around its neck that will discourage any would-be buyer.

It probably would happen some time, some way. Comcast would by them, spin off AOHell and probably go after Disney again.

I also wouldn't put it past them that once Time Warner Cable or Comcast bought Cablevision, Comcast would assimilate the remaining company.

Time will tell and should be very interesting.

Re: Next in the news.

Any merger would have to be relatively soon- the election brings regulatory uncertainty- even a McCain administration is expected to be less pro-merger as the Bush one has been.

As a Cablevision Customer, I would not like to see either TWC or Comcast buy CV since neither has the speed or price support that CV has. I have a friend who lives north of me who pays more than he would from CV for his TWC and gets only 5/.384 (I am not sure what the up speed is - it might be 512 but it is crippled no matter what) connection compared to the CV basic of 15/2. Comcast would at least offer DOCSIS 3.0 (in 4 years) but CV will have it much sooner (I'd say by the end of 2009) unless they are bought out and the service is "equalized" by downgrading to TWC's or Comcast's Slow "High Speed" Speeds.

How does AOL have anything to do with Time Warner Cable. TW only spun off Time Warner Cable- NOT AOL. AOL is still a brand that is owned by TW.

I think he was talking about Comcast buying Time Warner, Inc. Comcast has made no secret about wanting to be more of a content provider, after all.

Merger with Brighthouse would be nice

Change the name to bright house and do a merger.

Brighthouse is not that much better than TW but a better name. Forget Comcast buyout, government wouldn't allow it.

Or better yet make up some new name for the company.

Re: Merger with Brighthouse would be nice

Oh, I'm sure some "corporate branding" firm will get a ton of money for some random name...

Though they may take the lazy route like fellow TWX spin-off Time Warner Telecom, which is now "tw telecom" since they've lost the rights to the Time Warner name.

Little impact except for increased rates to pay the debt. Of course they're a cable company, so they constantly raise rates anyway, so maybe you're right.

Re: Impact

I doubt they'll raise prices much if at all. I have a feeling that TWC is a good buy right now, as it's a very profitable business.

Rebranding is a bitch

Hopefully the rebranding to a new name won't interrupt rollout of SDV, more HD channels, etc. Rebranding for large companies is a bitch. I've gone through it with my company and it can indeed interfere with other things.

Re: New Name!

I think the supreme court will rule the comcast has it's rights to be over 30% of the cable business. Also comcast is shedding it's rural markets. Eventually I believe comcast will buy out ALL of the major metro market areas and a company like wide open west, charter, suddenlink, or some other small company will end up owning more rural areas like mine (not really rural but not in a major metro area). This way comcast still has control over much of the us without being over a 50% threshold.

Does that mean subscribers will get constantly billed for pay-per-view events they didn't order?

Still, today's digital cable is very much in line with what QUBE was intended to be.

Being from Columbus, yes I do. Even though I was outside of their service area (Coaxial Communications, now Insight). Had a friend that had QUBE back in its last few years though.
