'Tis The Season For Cable Rate HikesIs TelcoTV already having an impact? ( old news - 10:42AM Thursday Dec 28 2006) tags: Video · competition · business · TVIPThe end of the year is usually synonymous with higher cable bills, and this year is no exception: see Indiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York and Florida for starters. Some analysts proclaim that rate hikes are slightly smaller this year, as public attention is focused on cable prices thanks to the FCC's recent push to bring telcoTV competition to the sector. While many of these reports share optimism over the impact of telcoTV on cable rates, it's going to take the better part of a decade for telcoTV competition to reach many areas, and less profitable markets may never see such services. And of course, if you happen to live in a Qwest territory like Arizona, such optimism is even more unfounded since Qwest has no real plans to offer broad IPTV. Related:- Florida U-Verse

| Qwest "...if you happen to live in a Qwest territory like Arizona -- such optimism is even more unfounded, since Qwest has no real plans to offer broad IPTV."
Qwest is basically playing a waiting game. I think that Dick Notebart is watching SBC (oops, AT&T) to see how they do with IPTV over copper. If they can make it work well, and get all the bugs out, you will see Qwest start deploying the same solution. It is the least expensive way to go, and leverages the existing copper for a few more years, as there is still gold in that copper. However, Qwest does want to get into video company wide, so if the death star can't make it work, I think you will see more fttp deployments.

| Re: Qwest Do you honestly think so?
I just want to highlight the theory of the great SBC management when it comes to what they THINK they have.
Here's an article from SFGATE quoting SBC/AT&T:
"AT&T is investing $1 billion in California alone to deliver the future of communications and entertainment services," said AT&T spokesman Ted Carr. "Our competitors are investing in a platform of the past." »sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f···CAST.TMP
They somehow believe that fiber to the neighborhood to copper is superior to fiber to the node over coax. Cable has been offering, essentially, the same technology as what telephone HOPES to enter the market with for years, and AT&T calls their service the "future" and cable the "past?" I have to laugh my ass off simply because while they are trying to, essentially, push service through the internet to the consumer, cable has a multitude of services running through that so-called "technology of the past"... AT&T is getting desperate.
Qwest will never, in my opinion, get to see the bugs in the SBC system other than service over twister pair isn't the way to go period from SBC.
I believe Qwest, again in my opinion, will eventually (years from now) invest in a fiber to the home or curb solution vs copper or simply fold and sell out. -- "Wipe out the national deficit over night... Tax the stupid!" - about 50 gMail invites available. PM if you'd like one.

| If.... ... your ESPNs, Disneys,Turners, et al keep raising the rates for _________ cableco to feed their channels, _________ cableco will have to raise the cost to the user.
IPTV will be no exception! SAT as well!
Get over it!
Sure, _______ IPTV is cheap now, wait for it... y'all will see. Those rates will get a nice bump as well.
*IF* you are lucky enough to get an SD or HD OTA signal, and don't mind not getting cable only channels, I envy you! I live in a valley. No OTA for me! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

DirecTV isn't cheap! Once you add the extra receivers, it isn't much better price-wise. Dish, hate to say, seems to have problems with stations wanting more cash to let them carry the channel. Remember the Lifetime fiasco? Ergen is the #1 reason why Dish would never sit on my roof. And, rain in Pensacola makes both tile and go out a lot. Friends have it and some have both cable and sat just because of the rain factor!
FIOS will not be $35 for 5/2 service forever either. Once they get half the market, I bet that becomes $45-50 easy.
Upload is $$$$ and FIOS will be no different that any other ISP on passing along the costs of it. FIOS TV will stay cheap then a price will come.
Cable channels charging ridiculous prices cause your cable bill to go up NOT the cable co. $2 for ESPN? Another $1.50 for ESPN2? Even the frickin' TV Guide channel gets $.25 a month!
It is time for A La Carte Pricing!

Actually, it's time for them to sink or swim by what they get in advertising and a small universal monthly fee from the providers. An awfull lot of the channels are nothing but endless repeat crap anyway.

| Who has whom over a barrel? It's circular finger pointing as far as I'm concerned: Content producers blame cost of content, provider of content blames content producers, repeat. They both love it and both work & lobby to keep it that way.
Someone w/sense says 'ala carte' or more packages (e.g. non-sports) to ease costs and round we go again (Not McCain, he's full of BS and only pays lip service to issues).
You won't see cost savings packages, or ala carte, because of the mass downgrading it would promote. Same thing with lower tier HSI incentives for folks who don't want to add $45 (or a new $60) to their monthly bill. -- "I am not young enough to know everything." Oscar Wilde

| Cable increase It is all supply and demand. The cable companies will charge as much as the customer will allow. They are not going to charge $100 a month if the customer is willing to pay $125. They will continue to raise prices until there is alot of push back. They will then keep prices steady for awhile and then try to raise again. Most people just accept the increase.
