Deals with Fandango, Yahoo, & Live365
(old news - 02:00PM Thursday Dec 01 2005)
tags: Video · hardware · content
A bit more detail has emerged concerning Tivo's push into the broadband content space; the company teaming with movie-ticketing service Fandango, Yahoo and programming service Live365. Users will be able to access Yahoo's photo service with their DVR, browse the Fandango website with their remote, and access other web-content, like podcasts and games.

Lame

All I want my Tivo to be is a glorified VCR like it already is.

I am perfectly happy using a computer to access web content.

Re: Lame

We're also talking downloading programs, so it's not quite the same as "WebTV". They've already pushed that update to mine.

That would be a plus to some people BUT with all the ISP's complaining about bandwidth hogs as it is, and many of the cable companies pushing their own DVR service, I can see a fight brewing over this.

Re: Lame

Oh I don't doubt it. Best outcome is that those ISPs wake up and quit pretending to provide 'unlimited' service and instead use this as a tool to sell higher bandwidth (read:$$$) connections. In an uncharacteristic display of customer-centric behavior, my provider (SBC) is not playing that game and doesn't much care how much bandwidth you hog. They even allow servers on 'residential' connections.

It's going to take TiVo or something similar to get true VoD--independent of some cable company's marketing department--off the ground. It'll be interesting to watch who starts shooting at it first once it's airborne.

Bu Bu Bu But you'd miss out on all the extra advertising and special offers that will come out of these partnerships.;):D

I hope that when Comcast starts using TIVO in their DVR's that they make some of the better TIVO features available.

"It won't be available to the 2.7 million...

who get TiVo through DirecTV."

That's up to DirecTV.

I wouldn't count on DirecTV adding those additional features. If I'm not mistaken: Isn't DirecTV now pushing out their own private label DVR's? If so then I'd expect emphasis on their DVR box over TiVo's.

Where are the service for transferable videos?

I deactivated my Tivo 1st gen long tiome ago, back then when I dropped DirecTV for its shitty HD lineup and service - but I'm ready to reconsider Tivo *IF* I can really transcode my shows to my PSP. Then I am willing to buy a standalone unit immediately.

Re: Where are the service for transferable videos?

I doubt it will be available for Directv users like myself. Seems we get the shaft everytime. Directv is trying to get out of the tivo business and market their own DVR to their customers. This really sucks. No tivo-to-go, on tivo on video ipod, and now this.

How about something useful like HD

They should spend more effort creating units which can handle HDTV.

Tivo looks crappy on my 42" plasma. Real crappy.

not for me

I don't like using my TV to access content on the internet. I love Tivo, but the unit is slow and the TV resolution is poor. I don't want to sit in front of TV and get frustrated while navigating these content. If I really want to be a couch potato, I'd be better off connecting a computer to the TV and HT system. But the first reason why I got a Tivo was to make my time in front of the TV more efficient to begin with.
