Tivo's Broadband Kung-Fu is Strong
DVR maker offers up Hong Kong action flick
by Karl Bode Wednesday 16-Nov-2005 tags: hardware · VoIP · content
Tivo is tinkering with a broadband download service, according to the company website. As part of their "TiVo Video Download trial program", the company is offering Hong Kong action flick Red Trousers as a digital download on November 23. Some instructions on how to download the film to a Tivo Series2 DVR can be found here. Series 1 & DirecTivo customers are out of luck, and Series2 owners need service numbers beginning with one of the following: 110, 130, 140, 230, 240, 264, 275, 540, 565, 590, and 595.

I have always been a Tivo supporter ever since i got mine about 2 years ago, back before i could get an on-demand type service. Tivo does a good job with their service and easy to use set top, and frankly i am glad to see them get into more expansive things like this. i say way to go Tivo.

Re: good..

Not sure if this is me being a dumb user, but every night around 12:31 am, my Toshiba TiVo DVD-R asks me if I wish to let TiVo download extended data, or some such...and if I don't select "No" within an alloted time, it changes my channel to some TV-Guide "Specially For TiVo" show chalk-loaded with advertisements. Kinda irritating when I'm in the middle of Adult Swim, but is it really downloading something, or just tuning me into a commercial bundle exclusive for TiVo?

Re: good..

This downloading of extended data is for the TiVo Showcases. Its not really downloading anything from the Internet. Rather its tuning into a specific channel (usually the Discovery channel) to record advertisements, promotions, and such for TiVo customers. Like a Ford commercial, or a TV Guide review of a (new) show encouring you to record. I've in the past did not allow the TiVo unit to get this "extended data" if I was awake and watching tv at 4 o'clock in the morning. It had no negative impact on my service.

Oh, I thought it was doing something actually, and would just switch to normal TV as it "downloaded" it's special programming in that show. Guess I'll just tell it to go to hell now.

Why only series2?

I don't understand why so many TIVO customers are being left out of this service. Do you have to go out and buy a new box for new services coming down the line?

Re: Why only series2?

Well Series1 don't have network capabilities which explains why they can't do this.

DirectTV TiVo's are network capable from a hardware level, but DirectTV refuses to enable the network features of them in software because DirectTV wants people to buy their new DVRs instead of TiVos. People have hacked the DirecTiVos to enable these features.

Forget these new services... TiVo to Go, On Demand Programming, etc. There needs to be an HD capable TiVo box out already. Manufactureres of cable boxes have already beat them to the game, i.e. Motorola and Scientific Atlanta. Yes, they may not have all the functionality of TiVo. It has bare bones functionality but they at least they are HD capable and can record 2 shows sent analog or digital at once. And by the time TiVo gets to market I'm sure those cable boxes will have matching functionality.

Re: Why only series2?

Cable HD and digital boxs have the advantage of closed hardware. They will not open the spec to Tivo and will not share the profits in a joint venture.
I am in the process of replacing my SA 8000 PVR with a MythTV box. The cable box is slow, the interface is horrible, the remote layout is non-intuitive and usually needs two hands. The cable company in my case can't get the schedule correct were as the Tivo schedule is rarely wrong. The two tuners was not enough to off set the problems for me so I am ditching it.

Actually Comcast made a deal with TiVo to offer TiVo software on the Motorola and SA boxes that Comcast uses. It should be available in 2006.

Also in 2006, TiVo will be offering a cablecard HD TiVo.

Who Cares!

Only a handful of people are watching a handful of channels that actually broadcast in HD. TiVo will come around when it becomes necessary, but the selling point "supports HD" is not currently worth the price of the R&D involved.

It looks like Tivo is catching up with the Times!

Now they have a Web Site to connect your Tivo's from your Home Network, it's not only Dial-Up anymore. I'm starting to see more Electronic Manufacturers waking up to the fact, that Networks will play a big role in connecting their equipment. I feel Ethernet Ports should be standard to connect to your Home Network.

And also, if he/she wants a new series 2 without paying the full price, check EBay. I just won one for my brother for x-mas for only $88 bucks. Kinda makes me wish I had gotten my TiVo from EBay.

Re: It looks like Tivo is catching up with the Times!

New ones are $49 at the TiVo website, Best Buy and elsewhere. At $88 you were taken for a ride...unless it comes with a lotta months of service.

Re: It looks like Tivo is catching up with the Times!

Hmmmm......The Promotion your looking at is new. I don't think it was in place when I won mine on EBay.

Actually, it's more than just 49 bucks your coughing up. Under TiVo's old plan you'd pay $49 but that included a mail in rebate. And the rebate takes a minimum of 12 weeks to be returned (I know from experience).

This new promotion says the box is $49 bucks but (and there always is a but), you have to pay for a full 12 months of service on top of the 49 bucks which comes out to 200 bucks.

Gotta read the fine print dude.

So do you. The $49 is with the $150 rebate or with 12 months prepaid service.

Enjoy your eBay purchase.

Exactly. What this promotion is doing is making it easier for those that don't have 500 bucks to shell out on the box and service all at once.

Any way you look at it what you pay for at the time of purchase, (if you buy your box from TiVo) is at least 200 not 49. Thats the point I was getting at.

Of course you have to buy another box.

Only the TiVo 2 has an ethernet port.
Duh..

If you have a Tivo series 1 then you were like me and many others, an early adopter.

Thanks to us, Tivo got a great start!

I'm unsure how the fact that your tivo has no ethernet port escaped you all this time.

Now stop whining and go get a $49.00 tivo2!

sheesh.

My series 2 TiVo only has USB ports, not ethernet. I'm using a USB to ethernet adapter.

Actually, very few (if any) new TiVos have an ethernet port in them. Most have a modem w/ USB ports. Once you've done the dial-up intial setup, you can then feel free to get a WiFi/Ethernet USB card and hook up your TiVo accordingly.

My Toshiba TiVo DVD-R isn't all that old, yet had no built-in networking. I can't imagine putting an ethernet card in these things jacking up the price that much...but since I don't design them, we'll just have to wait for them to get with the times.

Re: Of course you have to buy another box.

No TiVo currently being made comes with an ethernet port.

TiVo had a choice to include either a USB port or ethernet port and they went with a USB port figuring that it was more versatile (for example you can hook up a wireless usb adapter).

Re: Of course you have to buy another box.

A little off topic, but does anyone know if the USB ports are 1.1 or 2.0? The transfer of shows using T2G seems very slow over wireless. The Tivo site recommends a wired connection to improve this speed, but if the USB port is 1.1, your only gonna get 1.5 Mbps anyway!?!?

Re: Of course you have to buy another box.

It depends what number your TSN begins with. If it begins with 140 (you have a model 140 TiVo) the USB ports are 1.1 otherwise they are 2.0.

As of software version 7.0 the drivers allow USB 2.0 speeds, but you'll never see those speeds. Assuming you don't have a 150 model, you will get a performance boost if you use a USB 2.0 compatible USB adapter.

You didn't mention what model number you have, but the TTG speeds on the 540 (newer model) runs about 1/2 the speed as that of the 240 (older model). Also wireless speeds aren't that great (about 4.5 mbps max speed).

I have a 240 model series 2 connected to a Linksys WET54g (wireless G bridge) through a Linksys USB200M (USB 2.0 network adapter). My AP is a Linksys WRT54G in G only mode. Even with this setup I max out at around 7 mpbs for TTG.

If you have a TiVo unit with TiVo software 7.x and higher you don't need to do the initial dial-up setup. It'll work over your broadband connection so long as you have a compatible USB to Ethernet/WiFi adapter. Allegedly you could do initial set-up over a network before version 7.x . Though I never tried the ,#401 prefix to see if it actually worked.

It does work. That's how I got my TiVo started. My TiVo has never had a phone line hooked to it.

Same here. I broke down and got a TiVo a couple of weeks ago, and the ,#401 trick worked fine, even though I had v.1.5 of the software to start with.

Ditto, same with mine but I did have a lot of issues getting the newest version of the TiVo software loaded. Problem was I didn't have a phone line and had to use a friends.

But after 4 attempts to get the update it happened and my TiVo has been connected to my network ever since.
