Top Comcast Lobbyist Hosting Hillary Clinton Fundraiser Thursday Jun 18 2015 08:04 EDT With the FCC embracing new net neutrality rules and recently blocking Comcast's $49 billion attempted acquisition of Time Warner Cable, the cable giant probably isn't particularly pleased with the current administration or Democrats in general. The company's best chance at getting the current net neutrality rules scrapped lies in a 2016 President willing to appoint a new FCC boss who'll gut the rules. The last few months of "bad news" haven't soured Comcast's top lobbyist David Cohen on Democratic candidates, however. The Philadelphia Inquirer (via Stop the Cap) notes that Cohen will host a $2,700-a-plate fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton at his home in Philadelphia later this month: quote: Comcast exec and power-broker David L. Cohen and his wife, Rhonda, are holding a midday "conversation" and fundraiser with presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton at their house June 26. Tickets are $2,700 a person, the maximum individual contribution allowed to federal candidates per election, according to a copy of the event invitation obtained by The Inquirer.
Clinton supported the FCC's decision to reclassify broadband ISPs as a utility under Title II in order to enact tougher net neutrality provisions. Personal political contributions are of course Cohen's prerogative, but it remains unclear how Cohen squares supporting a net neutrality supporting Presidential candidate when he's been at the forefront of trying to dismantle real net neutrality protections for years. Cohen manages to consistently skirt lobbying rules -- by pretending he's not a lobbyist. The cable executive has given himself the title of "Chief Diversity Officer" at Comcast to skirt laws requiring that employees who spend 20 percent or more of their work on lobbying or related activities have to formally register as a lobbyist in Washington. |
