Top ISPs, Q2Dial-up migration continues, slows... ( old news - 09:42AM Friday Sep 14 2007) tags: competition · business · stats ISP Planet releases their quarterly list of the country's largest ISPs, and notes that the top five ISPs in the country now control 56.5% of the market. America Online and Earthlink, as you might expect, continue to lose subscribers by the millions, while AT&T and Comcast take first and second place, respectively, among all operators. As we've discussed, the traditionally slow second quarter was even slower than usual for broadband growth, which Pew Internet recently attributed to a slowdown in the market. As the low-hanging fruit (dial-up converts) gets picked, ISPs are focusing more on customer retention and bundle pricing battles. Technically, the nineteen largest cable and telephone providers in the U.S. account for 94% of the market, and that consolidation is expected to continue with the potential sale of operators such as Charter and Insight.

| Silly System "Top" ISPs. My butt. The "top" ISPs should be a rating mix based on: Speed, Limitations on Service (caps, closed ports, etc), and Customer Service. NOT # Subscribers, because in some regions they may be the only viable choice.

| Considering the point of the article was to rate the ISP by their size (i.e. number of subscribers), I believe it was on target. What you are asking for is more than likely related to customer satisfaction...which there have been several articles ranking the ISPs in this realm as well. | |

1 edit | And the other problem.... Is this list can't get access to information from private companies, like Cox. Cox is at least in the top 5.
One thing to note though is the gain in CenturyTel....usually the ONLY choice for a given area because they serve the sticks. Up 21.1 percent, I think because they started allowing COs that have always been DSL capable to start serving customers....not because of some network upgrade.

As for SBC..AT&T..Grandma bell..whatever you want to call them..I can't help but to think it's a pretty telling sign that out of their 17.3 Million broadband subs..only 100,000k are uverse subs and it's taken them a YEAR to get to even that number.
Phew..their new CEO better start looking for a new line of work me thinks.
Or, better yet..do as RR..err..Comcast Rick suggests...
and announce that Uverse..is DEAD..and AT&T FTTH..is ALIVE!

Of the 3 listed that are losing customers instead of growing, they are all primarily dial-up companies. So the march towards broadband continues unabated.

AOL, Earthlink, UnitedOnline (Netzero).
I'm actually amazed that even with 6Mbps (Max sync, not throughput and not available in MANY places), AT&T is still adding DSL lines, and at a higher rate than Comcast.
I'm sure that it won't last too long, as they bleed POTS customers, they have to offer naked DSL.
Were you out here in California this morning, Comcast Rick?
Someone was either very drunk, or despised AT&T.
A light pole, fire hydrant, AT&T cross connect and Uverse VRAD were all run down.
Then again.. it could have been some of those copper theives attempting to get some old copper.

| dial-up will seem a bit faster and dsl will seem slower when the massive groups of people getting on dsl, but on dial-up you got the ever present 53 Kb speed limit but it'll be less crowded, i'm on dial-up here with netzero and i'm just waiting for some forum of broadband to be available here  | |

| My First ISP... Was a few nice guys that answered their own phones. I would call and get help. I would stop by with a few muffins as thanks. Long story short, they sold and ended up Earthlink. Now I use Verizon and owe a beer to some guy in Mexico City for his help. | |
