Battle with entertainment industry continues...
(old news - 10:33AM Monday Aug 27 2007)
tags: legal · Fileswapping
Popular BitTorrent search site TorrentSpy has started blocking U.S. users. The website has been engaged in a legal fight with the MPAA over handing over user search records. American users who try to use the site now receive this warning message (in addition to some delicious URL spam):
Sorry, but because you are located in the USA you cannot use the search features of the Torrentspy.com website. Torrentspy’s decision to stop accepting US visitors was NOT compelled by any Court but rather an uncertain legal climate in the US regarding user privacy and an apparent tension between US and European Union privacy laws.
More than 15% of TorrentSpy users are U.S. residents. More detail on TorrentSpy's legal efforts here.

They're blocking my Canadian ISP

Not that I ever use the site, but i followed the link in the article and they are blocking my ISP (which is Canadian). Our copyright laws are even more lax then the EU, I wonder why they're blocking us out.

If you followed this link »www.torrentspy.com/US_Privacy.asp , no wonder you were blocked.

Might be because your ISP routes through a US gateway meybe?

I dont know, these pipe things get all twisted together and for some reason get clogged with all sorts if internets things.

It works from 2 Canadian providers that don't use .ca (rogers.com & telus.net), if you are on Teksavvy they likely need to be registered somewhere.

God awful site

The site is shit anyway I never use it. Also if you read about people who get DMA notice's in their email most times it from using a torrent from that site.

HM it blocks me and I'm not even in the US. So they really smart I wonder how long it will take them to tell their ad banner people we just blocked %15 of our user base from seeing your ads.

The Future for US Citizens on the Internet....?

"Hello...

Your connection appears to originate from inside the USA.
Due to persecution from the U.S. Government, and fear of legal attack by large U.S. Corporate Interests, this site has no choice but to block all connections that appear to come from within the U.S.A. or any of it's territories or occupied countries. We regret any inconvenience, and suggest you work to change your government from within. Goodbye.

You will now be redirected to an appropriate internet site for Americans.

Re: The Future for US Citizens on the Internet....?

That is the future... as grim/bleak as it may sound.
DVD's were originally designed this was as well (codes for specific countries), banning some DVD's from playing on DVD players in other countries. This is JUST the beginning. The Internet will be corporate owned. If it is owned by the government... it will be managed by big corp with heavy lobbiests.

Firewall blocking

Oh well, my firewall is working so it wouldn't matter. The message I get is:

Request denied by WatchGuard HTTP proxy.
Reason: one or more categories denied helper='WebBlocker.1' details='Remote Proxies'
Method: GET
Host: www.torrentspy.com
Path: /US_Privacy.asp

I don't know why it is called a remote proxy, but so be it.
