HP starts up a "PRIVATE" video sharing site: Gabble

»bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/1···youtube/
Gabble is a new site from Hewlett-Packard that lets people post videos online. But unlike Google’s YouTube service, which is geared to sharing with the masses, only people invited to your Gabble group can view your videos.
»h20545.www2.hp.com/help.jsp#recording
How long can the videos be?
Recorded videos (with your webcam) can be up to 2 minutes long. Uploaded videos are limited to 100Mb, but not limited by duration.

Can I send videos to people who aren't on Gabble yet?
Yep. You can send a direct video message to someone just by entering their email address. Your friend will be sent an email with a link that takes them to a page where they can watch your video.

There's another service that does that, and I think it can even be accessed from TiVo DVRs.

New venture wants you to pay for news; Good Luck!!

A trio of long-time media executives are building a computer system to allow newspapers and magazines to charge for online access, including an all-you-can-read subscription that would allow access to multiple publications, the executives said on Tuesday.
Their company, Journalism Online Inc., aims to supply publishers with ready-made tools to charge Internet fees, an idea that has gained sudden currency as advertising revenue plummets, but whose prospects of success are doubted by many media analysts.

As the company envisions the system, a non-paying reader on a magazine or newspaper site would reach a certain point and see a page asking for payment — the Journalism Online system, operating within the publication’s Web site. But a reader who wanted a subscription to multiple sites would go directly to the new company’s own site.

He said that for the unlimited subscriptions, “we’re playing with a figure of $15 a month.”

The company also plans to negotiate licensing and royalty fees with search engines and news aggregators for the use of the publications’ work, and has retained Mr. Boies’ law firm, Boies Schiller & Flexner, for that work.
Unless a very large majority of news providers agree to stop providing free news, this venture will never make it. Even if a small number of somewhat reputable web sites continues to provide free news, people will overwhelmingly choose free over pay sites.

AT&T wants to keep an iPhone exclusive

»online.wsj.com/article/SB1239732···715.html
But AT&T's exclusive deal to carry the iPhone in the U.S. expires next year, according to people familiar with the matter, and Mr. Stephenson is now in discussions with Apple Inc. to get an extension until 2011.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment, saying only, "We have a great relationship with AT&T."

Mr. Stephenson declined to discuss the terms of AT&T's agreement with Apple -- only saying it is a multi-year deal. The company has said it added 4.3 million iPhone subscribers in the second half of 2008 -- about 40% of whom were new to AT&T.
Will Apple be bribed enough by AT&T to keep the iPhone from other US wireless providers?

Re: AT&T wants to keep an iPhone exclusive

I'd be surprised if AT&T can offer a big enough deal but, at the same time, the lure of the iPhone is pretty massive. For Apple I would think potential AppStore profits would decide it. They haven't detailed the amount of money they are making off iPhone apps yet but given the incredible numbers and growth they gotta be making a fortune. AT&T would have to, at minimum, match the amount of sales Apple loses by not being able to reach other carriers. Also, from Apple's perspective, a big launch by Verizon would be free marketing and hundreds (thousands?) of new retail stores for their hardware. I just don't see how AT&T could offer enough money to keep it exclusive but stranger things have happened.

Re: imagine how expensive

Imagine the members of the RIAA pay me for the crap they produce that I don't want to hear! I'd be richer than Billy Gates and wouldn't care how expensive really fast fiber is.

Former Qwest CEO

Nacchio was handed a six-year prison sentence in April 2007 having been found guilty on 19 counts of insider trading. The former CEO was also fined $19m and ordered to forfeit $52m in profits from the sales of Qwest stock.

Isn't and wasn't Qwest a publicly traded company? If so please tell me how the CEO gets paid $52m for selling something that he doesn't own. I know he was the CEO but I don't get how he should be getting that much money. This is the problems with CEO's they seem to think if they run a company they should get paid bonus' and extra money for stuff they did, Even if it is running the company into the ground.

Most people when they get hired they are told that they will earn so much an hour or how much per month even year. But guess what most employees don't get to do. They don't get paid major bonus. Some don't get bonus' at all. And you can guarantee that if one of the other employees was running the company into the ground they wouldn't have a job and wouldn't get a giant severance pay like these CEO's that don't deserve it.

BlackBerry on Sprint

My BB service on Sprint has been getting progressively worse over the last month or so. Long delay on "push" e-mail. 30-45 minutes. It would be much quicker to just POP it from the phone itself but I don't think that's possible to do for some reason.

Users Lament Kindle 2 "Upgrades"

How are they selling this e-reader? It's more than $350 and the books are at least $9.99.

I looked at several of the books offered at the $9.99 price and most are offered for less (even with shipping) as used books. Bezos could probably sell ice cubes at the North Pole, AND charge for shipping.
