I guess Google's engineer's finally got Google's PR machine to tell the truth: »gigaom.com/broadband/say-what-go···r-a-gig/
When is a gigabit not a gigabit? Perhaps when its Googles gigabit network. Speaking today at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Googles Chairman Eric Schmidt said the companys planned fiber-to-the-home network in Kansas City (Missouri and Kansas) will deliver sustained speeds of between 300 to 500 Mbps. This is still fast, but its not the gigabit that Google originally touted. -- The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, I'm from the government and I'm here to help. »www.politico.com/2012-election/

| | | Re: Google's KC fiber net won't be gigabit says Schmidt Updated to say Schmidt misspoke. In any case Google's "PR machine" has a long long way to fall to match those ISPs that spend hundreds of millions of dollars advertising their "state-of-the art network" with "blazing fast" 10mbps (upload undisclosed, bandwidth capped) service. | |

| | | well TV + overhead may eat up some of the gigabit.
But anyways how many home systems have the HDD speed to make full use of GIG-e anyways?
Now 300 to 500 Mbps is better then other ISP's.

| Of course, in telecom speak at least, the 'Gigabit' is really the standard and not some reference to your actual speed. If it is more than 100 Mbits then it will not run on a Fast Ethernet circuit (100 Base), it will have to run on a Gigabit Ethernet circuit (1000 Base). I put in GigE circuits all the time where the customer is only paying for 200-500 Mbps.
It kind of reminds me of the people I talk to with cable modems that would plug into the modem and see their network notification icon display 'Connected at 100 Mbps'. They think that is their actual Internet connection speed... Yeah right!

the simple fact people have to flash the firmware on their Blu-Ray when they pop in that new movie they bought is a testament to your hatred of the customer. Meanwhile the Pirate has a great 1080p Rip and is half way into the film.

| @Mobile Net Kingpins ... because that's what we pay you for.
That's your job. That's how you make money. Don't want to upgrade? Fine, let's take your spectrum and give it to someone who will. I'm not crying any tears over your expenses--- not when you're making money hand over fist. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini
