Science Fiction becoming reality once again.

The "Projector Eyewear" (and related technology) has been in Science Fiction movies, books, games, etc for years.

It's only a matter of time. It makes sense, actually.

Shared Data Plan Calculator

Anyone look closely at the calculator bar graph? It seems to go to 30 GB.
Funny that they don't really sell anything at a reasonable price to allow this type of use.

Re:ViaSat Launches Satellite Service to Rival Broadband

The Mötley Fool site created a puff piece for ViaSat. Besides getting facts wrong on ViaSat, they also got speeds wrong on Comcast for the $50 plan. The Fool article author must have a relative working for ViaSat.

Wifi tablets #1

I think this is mostly because people tend to use a tablet in places with wifi. the typical user is not likely to surf the net in their car.

I would also imagine that many power users have their phones jailbroken/rooted and just tether the tablet. it is usually much more expensive to get a cellular tablet, and the fact they require a whole separate data plan also turns people away. Low caps also turn people away from 3g tablets.

Re: Wifi tablets #1

I just bought 2 iPads for my wife and I. Both are wifi only models. My wife has a iPhone 4s with a data package. I refuse to pay for 3 data plans. When Verizon decides to finally come out with the family data plan I'll give it another look. I doubt though that they will be reasonable considering their past history.

Most likely scenario for me though is to jailbreak the iPhone and use it as a hotspot for when we are away from home.

This is the way it should be. If you're paying for the data plan anyway, and it's metered, it's always been silly that you couldn't use the bytes in the manner you wish.

I do the same but I chose to pay for tethering. I have AT&T and they give me another 2GB for a total of 4GB. After the corporate discount, it's not too bad. Don't get me wrong, it's not cheap and I agree that I should be able to use the 2GB for which I pay any way I want. However, that's not the way the carriers think.

I also believe 9/10 tablets sold are WiFi because this is the first time folks have purchased a PC (assuming they are getting the tablet as a PC replacement) and in addition to the sale price, they have to sign up for a monthly service plan. If they don't, the extra money they pay to get wireless is a waste. Of course when they get home they might sign up for virus protection but that's not in-store and it's after the initial purchase. It's also usually only $30/year or something, not $30/month.

Another potential issue is adding wireless to these devices isn't universal like WiFi. You get tied to a carrier. In my opinion, that's a turn off. I know Apple isn't fond of providing a slots but this is one area where a slot would be really nice. Of course this kills the extra price you pay Apple and turns it into a sale for the carrier. (Assuming the carrier provides a plug-in module in exchange for some contract term or $50-$100 outright purchase.

However, as above, this isn't the way Apple or the carriers think.
