A plan we'd all like.. How does an Android phone with unlimited talk and text, plus 2GB data a month for $10 sound? Pretty good, right? Well, you have to be "low income" to get it.
Political hyperbole aside, here's the nuts and bolts of this "pilot" program:
"As proposed by TracFone, 500,000 to 1,000,000 low-income households would participate in the trial. In the pilot program, TracFone will offer its customers handsets that have an Android operating system. In addition, all plans will include the following bundled services each month: unlimited voice, unlimited texts, and 2GB of data, billing the government at up to $45 per person per month, the successful proposal says. The entire Washington Times article is here:
The company later significantly scaled back its pilot proposal to a $1 million plan that would require the largest group of customers to pay $10 a month, with the company filing for reimbursements for up to $25 per customer monthly.
IMHO, this is disgusting. The article states it's to be funded with the USF to the tune of an already-paid $2.50/mo tax per free market consumer. A case could be made for a standard phone with a block of minutes and cheap texting, but data?? What happens when someone on this plan uses up their 2GB? Do they have a hard block once their gigs are up, and does TracFone plan to ban MB-burning apps like Pandora and Facebook? There are way too many unanswered questions and the potential for misuse isn't something I want to imagine.

Re: A plan we'd all like.. TracFone is the biggest abUser of the "Lifeline Free Cellphone" (total freeloader) system. They have the most Lifeline phones issued in the USA and the owner of TracFone is THE richest man in the world.
Everytime they give away another one of these "deals" the bill for the USF grows, and the fee will keep expanding exponentially.
Local media has been running stories on the complete fraud of the Lifeline system that local companies here have been engaging in for several years. They have interviewed and even used hidden cameras to document and report these companies just giving away "Lifeline" phones to anyone and everyone, people who don't qualify, criminals, illegals, people who already have one...two...three...four.... Ten... etc etc
The problem is really bad here in Oklahoma because they abuse the "Indian Territories" clauses and the $10 a month is only $1-$2 a month. There are people selling activated phones at the flea markets for $20 no questions asked, 1000 minutes, text and data. Drug dealers use them as throwaway phones for deals.
It's sickening and disgusting, and companies like TracFone and Cricket and others should be fined into oblivion... but hey, Welfare is BIG BUSINESS.
