It kind of makes me wonder who is going around giving state politicians this language.

The ones pushing this language are probably some ambulance chasing law firms(or the ABA as a whole) looking to generate a lot of lawsuits for defamation, slander, libel or invasion of privacy. Even if you win when sued, you pay a lot of money to lawyers while the politician suing you is funded by public tax dollars.

How can one defame, slander, or libel an Illinois politician, just look at their governors, making license plates.

For clarity, I grew up in IL (southern IL) and left as soon as I could.

how much power would such a bill actually have. If it is only at the state level they would be hard pressed to enforce it on say this website. as DSLR is hosted and operated from New Jersey afaik.

And yet, it also suspiciously mirrors efforts many large tech firms have tried to do with their social media.... Google, Facebook, even Blizzard entertainment. Wanting to attach real names and real ID's to public internet accounts, etc etc and discourage/prevent anonymous posting or pseudonyms.

Hmmmmm.

If I had to guess (which I do because I don't know ) I would say this is intended to protect businesses & politicians (same thing really) from people complaining about them. Home address?! Give me a break. How about when a post is deleted upon request, it is replaced with "Deleted by: " followed by the requestor's legal name (no corporate names allowed) and HOME address which the website admin has confirmed as valid? Since this has the potential for wasting TONS of the admin's time, the requestor should have to pay a $10 research fee for each removal (to verify their name/address)

Come on Techdirt, aren't you up on current politics? It is called ALEC!

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see that you already quoted that line!

Ubuntu Phone

If I'm going to buy an Ubuntu phone, I'll be sure to not buy it from a cell phone carrier. I'd be happy to pay a full price for my phone. Or I can buy me a Nexus 4 outright and put Ubuntu in it, but I do want more than 16GB of storage space. I do want a MicroSD card slot.

Or maybe I can wait for a phone that I can dock to a tablet and can be docked to a keyboard forming a laptop or connect a phone to a TV. Again, I'm happy to pay the full price of a phone. No contract whatsoever.

I'm in heaven with VoIP except for 3G wireless.
