RE: Wi-Fi piggybacking won't put you in pokey

Agree no jail time needed for simple access of someone else's WiFi connection. But a misdemeanor fine is certainly reasonable. But I do feel that those who hack in to a SECURED AP should get hammered big time. A BIG fine for a 1st offense and jail time for repeated offenses.

Re: RE: Wi-Fi piggybacking won't put you in pokey

Honestly, if someone hacked into my secured WiFi, as long as they weren't doing it to do anything illegal (and I'm thinking more "steal my identity" illegal than "download some movies off BitTorrent" illegal), I don't see any reason for them to go to jail- it just fills the jails with more nonviolent offenders, which is exactly what we don't need...

how do you KNOW they aren't doing anything illegal though. also if this person starts downloading kiddie pr0n it's YOUR IP that shows up and YOU are going to be the one arrested. Sorry but if someone is going through the effort of hacking into MY secure connection( which means I don't want anybody else using it ) then I am going to assume they are up to no good. No one "accidently" gets into a secure connection. Would you be cool if I broke into your house while you were at work just to watch TV because I can't afford cable? I mean if I'm not stealing anything what's the harm?

Also if it's ok with you don't complain about your sucky speeds while that guy and all his buddies are using all your bandiwth for hours on end downloading movies from bit torrent which in itself it wrong.

There's a difference between opposing jail time and opposing the action, you know...

I personally know someone who broke into a wifi, got caught, and was hit with a huge fine, 30 days community service AND 5 YEARS probation.

Wi-Fi leeching, spamming and driving 55 in the fast lane while talking on a cell phone should all be capital offenses.

Sure.

They denied they were traffic shaping too.
