Netflix's dual-premier idea might be a good one
Don Hertzfeldt brought his animations on tour to small US Theaters. I'd only ever seen them on PC monitors until he screened them for us in 16mm, the format he'd originally intended.
His animations are minimalist. But being part of a larger group that's getting immersed in the film was a much richer experience. That was, of course, the entire point of Don's tour.
Now, I'm being a bit ApplesOranges here. I was at a 100yo restored theater as part of a community drawn there to see the artist showcase his work. Netflix will likely show their offerings in the sort of corporate chain theater where high prices + crappy atmosphere originally drove patrons home and into the arms of Netflix.
Nevertheless, embracing big screens is good move by Netflix. If they can get past studio pressure on theaters to prevent the films from being shown, that is.
