UK Scraps Three Strikes Plan
But still hints at government-mandated P2P control
by Karl Bode Friday 05-Jun-2009 tags: Fileswapping · business · world
Yesterday we noted how the RIAA's having a hard time getting US ISPs to sign up voluntarily to play copyright cops -- booting heavy P2P users from their networks. In many countries, the entertainment industry's next course of action has been to lobby for laws forcing the ISPs to play along. While that's worked well in France, plans to force UK ISPs to play copyright nanny haven't been going quite so well (via Techdirt). The government has all but ruled out a "graduated response" approach, instead stating they'll use undefined "technical solutions" as a deterrent to heavy P2P users. That may not be a whole lot better, particularly if it involves ISPs who've cheaped out on infrastructure upgrades to placate investors advertising 8Mbps connections that really run at 896kbps.

Fight the fight!

I will always object to stopping/controlling P2P until they stop the spamming. And I doubt that will happen...

Spam isn't gobbling up bandwidth in the last mile like P2P is. Not the same thing at all.

Re: Fight the fight!

Besides, Spam costs the customer money and generates money for the ISP, whereas P2P costs the ISP money. These are prioritized accordingly.

Curious. What do you mean by saying that spam generates money for the ISP?

Re: Fight the fight!

The people that create and send the spam usually have a considerable amount of bandwidth themselves, despite the fact that they use nefarious methods. Unless things have changed, which is possible, these guys aren't running their operations from a Starbuck's.

And...

The people that File Share usually have a considerable amount of bandwidth themselves, despite the fact that they use BT/Usenet/Direct Download. Unless things have changed, which is possible, these guys aren't running their operations from a Starbuck's.

Sorry jmn... I had to point that out.

EDIT: It has been said, many times by many people, The only reason for faster connections is for filesharing or "stealing".

Well, I have 16mbps x 2mbps.
But, seeing as I barely hit 35GB per month combined directions... something just doesn't add up, does it?

"Thief!" (But the MPAA appreciates your eventual business as it calls you that.)

Re: Fight the fight!

I think that should be part of the MP/RIAA's New Quality campaign: "No Shit!" When you see those words on an **AA release it's guaranteed to be good or double your bandwidth back! Ah well, I can dream...*grin*

Spam doesnt gobble up bandwidth, but it does eat up other network resources such as storage. it also consumes dollars in the form of calls to tech support when the customer complains about spam or is using outlook express and gets a virus from said spam.

on corporate systems spam consumes drive space on the mail servers. overall the damage from spam is far more then P2P of music and movies.

You left out the part about "the last mile" to the customer. Try again to make your invalid point.
