US Govt Wants to Use Phone LocationI would've commented on this article but couldn't since I couldn't read it first because it was -paywalled-. Could we please refrain from posting paywalled content on the news page?
Thanks. | |

U.S. government, tech industry discussing ways to use smartphone location..."“Privacy is the first to go when there are national security issues,” said Ashkan Soltani, a former Federal Trade Commission chief technologist who covered the Snowden revelations as a journalist."
That alone should tell you something. It's like we learned nothing from 9/11.
"Facebook is already working with health researchers and nonprofits in several countries to provide anonymized and aggregated statistics about people’s movements through a project called disease-prevention maps."
They keep pushing those two words when it's already been de-anonymization works, and the more data the better.
Bigger question is does all this data collection actually work for the task at hand? The NSA justified theirs and has little to show for it. | | Lazlow join:2006-08-07 Saint Louis, MO

Tubi buyout. If I am reading that correctly that is Murdoch and not Disney. While I think the not Disney part is good, not sure what to think about the Murdoch part. | | DavePR join:2008-06-04 Canyon Country, CA

Location Datashould be anonymized before such research. I have no problem with observing by other means people moving (or not moving) in our midst. | |
