story category U.S. Not On List Of Top Ten IPTV Countries
But that should change relatively quickly...
(old news - 01:34PM Tuesday Jan 02 2007)
tags: stats · world · TVIP
The U.S. doesn't make a showing in a new list of the top ten IPTV nations. France tops the list, with 896,000 IPTV subscribers, followed by Hong Kong, Spain, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Morocco, Russia, the United Kingdom and Sweden. Obviously the United States fails to make this list because Fios isn't IPTV -- it's fiber and coax, and AT&T's IPTV launch is just pulling out of the garage. With Sweden having only 45,000 IPTV customers, it shouldn't take long for AT&T to help the U.S. not only make the list, but top it.

why?

Why would anyone want to be on top of this list if better services like fios don't count?

Re: why?

Bragging rights ?
Well, its not a whole lot to brag about, however, if AT&T uses IPTV/DSL as a stepping stone to IPTV/FTTH then its no big deal.

POTS/DSL --> POTS/VDSL2+ --> FTTH is a 'decent' plan as its phased and cost can be controlled.

POTS/DSL --> FTTH is big change.

I do agree that replacing POTS with FTTH will save in the long run, however, a large deployment isn't cheap, especially from the node to the home.
The biggest change that is relatively cheap to deploy is bringing fiber to the node. The node to home is not so cheap. Since AT&T is reusing DSL/POTS its a way to redeploy. DSL is typically lower cost service than HSI over cable and fiber, and thats what they're using. Having 3Mbps at $25/month isn't bad.

Because FIOS isn't IPTV, plain and simple... Period, end of discussion. This isn't about internet access, this is about video over IP.

Re: why?

Well it should be about delivering video the best way, and iptv over dsl isn't one of them.

Caps?

Wonder how long it will last with the real and virtual caps that many folks have?

Of course, this could be an exception to the caps, since I do not intend to get nor have it available, I do not know.

Who cares ?

I am more then happy with the 400 traditional channels i have now. Who cares about the delivery medium ?

Re: Who cares ?

If the medium restricts you to one tv, possibly two, I would imagine some people might care. Also knowing your 6mibt dsl could be 20mibt dsl if the iptv bandwidth was used for the internet, might piss one off.

It's just another delivery method.

I could care less about being top ANYTHING.

What does the delivery medium have to do with it? There is a reason we aren't rushing, as a nation, into IPTV... we have a well established delivery system. Not to mention, TV is an entertainment service, yes, as well as a news source too.

However, coax, fiber, microwave, off air antenna, fiber, etc... just because it's not coming via IP doesn't mean we're broke.

While they have IPTV, we have add digital cable systems coming into play and all digital satellite as well as a clean fiber delivery popping up. IPTV.. big deal... Ford, Chevy, dodge anyone? IBM clone, Mac? How about American Airlines vs Delta, United or Southwest?

.. as if IPTV defines a nation. (Maybe to those who care)

IPTV will fit into OUR society in the U.S. when the time is right.

Strange list

Why is the number of IPTV subscribers compared instead of the percentage of broadband users or all people in the country?

barring that, where's Canada on the list?

there's 50k subscribers in my province alone, without counting those on telus, MTS, or Aliant's networks

Where is Canada

I guess they forgot about Canada being on the list of IPTV providers. MTS Allstream has more then 56,000 IPTV customers in Manitoba alone, and SaskTel has more then 50,000 in Saskatchewan. This does not include data from Telus or Bell Aliant, which provide services to Alberta, British Colombia and Eastern Canada.
