U.S. Tops 2 Million Home Fiber Connections
And most of them belong to Verizon...

The Fiber To The Home Council will soon release a new study that says more than 2.14 million American homes now have a fiber connection. According to the outfit, Verizon accounts for more than two-thirds of those connections, and also accounts for more than two-thirds of all homes that are passed with fiber. The remaining third of the FTTH market belongs to 369 other service providers, most of them tiny.

The report notes that the "take rate" (homes passed with FTTH versus homes that sign up) for Verizon is 19%, while the take rate for those other companies is around 52%. It's not clear why, though we can speculate that Verizon is busier building than they are advertising. Overall, the average take rate for the entire FTTH industry rose from 22.3% to 26.8% during the last six-month period measured.

FTTH now passes 9.55 million U.S. homes, up 56% from last year. The number of fiber-connected homes has more than doubled since this time last year. The company e-mailed us to say the study has been released, but it's a no-show so far on the company's website -- just like FTTH in my neighborhood.

It's funny when even smaller ILECs like mine realize that running fiber directly to at least all new construction will be better in the long run than relying on an aging copper system.

I've got fiber directly to my house and internet/voice runs over it ... although they don't offer IPTV as of yet.

Why Verizon's "take rate" is lower

Here's one idea as to why fewer people who can get FiOS opt for it, compared to other fiber providers: perhaps other fiber providers are operating in less competitive markets, where their fiber is the only good option. There may also be some areas where it's the only option available under a deal the housing developers made with the ISP.

wish AT&T got in the mix. I know they said they wouldn't but man it would be good business.

Agreed. And the take-rate for the other companies may be due to muni operations, which I suspect garner a greater percentage being lower-cost and more responsive.

I can get FIOS here, but if the county ran a competing service, I'd almost surely jump over, even if it were at a (slightly) higher-cost.

Good

I guess Verizon will be getting around to hiring that second FIOS customer service rep soon.

Or they can just hire the first one full time.

Heck, I'd be happy to have copper. You all do realize there are still people in the world without high speed access. I believe we should be taken care of.
