U-Verse Hits 3 Former BellSouth Markets
Birmingham, Columbia, Nashville...

It looks like Birmingham, Alabama won't be the only former BellSouth market getting an early Christmas present from AT&T. The baby bell this morning has announced they'll be expanding their U-Verse VDSL and IPTV service into Birmingham, Alabama, Columbia, South Carolina, and select portions of Nashville and Middle Tennessee. In Tennessee, AT&T is promising to deploy service within two years to 60 cities and a number of counties including Chattanooga, Memphis, Knoxville and some rural areas. Last week U-Verse was deployed into two other former BellSouth markets: Orlando, Florida and Raleigh, North Carolina.

AT&T deploys U-Verse in Orlando, Eustis gets nothing.

AT&T is deploying U-Verse in Orlando, Florida but nearby Embarq subscribers in Eustis, Florida will still have to live with ADSL. Embarq management has said that ADSL is "Good Enough". I wonder what Embarq management has done with all the money given to them to deploy fiber in their serving area? Certainly not cut voice line rates.

ATT , listen to your customers for once

as a bellsouth ATT customer for years living in a rural area I am so sick and tired of seeing all these new services, dsl, uverse going to the densly populated ares and the rural communities getting nothing , how about instead of sending me all that junk snail mail offering me dsl and u verse when you know it will never happen and spend that money and upgrade the infrastructure in the rural areas so we can also enjoy " high speed bandwith "

signed 50 miles from Nashville and cant get anything except ISDN , no 3g , no dsl and certainly not u verse

Re: ATT , listen to your customers for once

This is a joke. AT&T announced this same service in Atlanta several months ago. I still do not know of a single person that has it, nor a single person that can get it in their neighborhood.

I have BellSouth fiber running down my street, and I cannot get better than 1.5x256 broadband from AT&T. BTW, I live in one of the largest population counties in the state.

So, it ain't y'all backwoods rednecks that are not getting it. I'm still waiting on 3M service (no dreams or hopes or waiting for 6M, or U-verse), but I'll stop soon.

Hands down, the crappy cable operator is doing so much better job at delivering HD video, higher speed broadband, and digital voice--and I'm not even advocating them!

So, who is in a better position, you are me?

I beat you both, I'm 1.5down/256up IN CHICAGO in 2008!
I think the day I see higher speeds is the day the Cubs win, which may be NEVER!

you can get higher speeds. Switch to Comcast or another cable company in Chicago.

well its all a matter of perspective , depends on how you look at it , I would kill for 1.5 mbps down , 128 kbps up and down is pretty horrible even for the simplest web browsing nowadays

I've got it, and I'm just west of you in Alpharetta. Several people in my neighborhood have it and there are VRADs all around, including my parents' place in Dunwoody.

Hang in there. It's still a crapshoot, but it's coming. I've been very happy with it for the most part.

You are in Duluth, Right? You must be too far out. They have been bugging me for 2 months and I had to run them off my property. U-verse sucks and their Sales Team Lie. They told me it was fiber to my home (I told them it was VDSL and they said it's not DSL its Fiber!, LOL) and that they already made a special connection to my house. LOL

While that completely sucks, if you have NO options, including wireless 3G services, you are in the middle of absolutely nowhere and the population per square mile is so low you're just not profitable. 50 miles outside of almost any big city is a long way ... even 5 miles outside of a big city would be iffy for a lot of services.

Hopefully the government will have a plan to subsidize deployment to people like you before too long that isn't riddled with the USF deficiencies.

I live further from nashville than you but I get 10 Mbps from Charter and 6 Mbps form at&t. See you are not to far from Charlotte and Dickson you'll probably have to move there to get broadband. By the way verizon does offer 3G where you live. $60 for only a 5 GB monthly cap is not worth it to me though.

Complete existing markets first

Sure would be nice if AT&T/U-Verse would first complete deployment in the markets they've already started (specifically, metro Atlanta) before starting new markets. I believe U-Verse has been in "imminent deployment" mode for about three years in our area (Cobb County) and coverage is spotty at best. To add insult, the terms appear to be getting worse all the time (no more free additional boxes, for example) and from what I am reading, installation service is poor and getting worse. I had hoped U-Verse would be good competition for Comcast, not so sure anymore.

U-verse in Nashville

They're at my home installing it now. I'll update after they finish. I signed up for the top TV tier and the 18mb internet svc.

Ask them about that special fiber connection they made to your home. LOL Hope you get back online, they may knock you off and tell you it can't be fixed until after the first of the Year. If we don't here from you, whom do we contact?

And someone thinks it's Fiber To The Home now. Seriously though, I'm wondering which parts of Columbia get this first, maybe some spots around downtown then out in the northeast around Clemson Rd. That'd be fun to see people complaining about the VRAD box in the yard.

Lies

Sure, maybe 3 AT&T employees can get the U-Verse service in the named areas, but 90% of the people in those areas won't be able to order for at least a year.

Here in Miami, FL they did the same "announcement" about their "roll-out" and I can see the VRad 2 blocks away powered on and all -- but still can not order U-Verse.

I have no idea why, but..

I live in Lauderdale County in Tennessee, and our area (about 5 mi out from a town of 9k) just got DSL in July. Thanks to the fiber fed VRADS, we should see U-Verse in that two year timeframe.

New crews or moving existing ones?

Are they hiring new crews to deploy in these new areas or are they moving existing crews from other areas after they finish doing 2 neighborhoods?

upload still 1.5mb?

Nice news but can they upgrade the upload speed sometime in the future? I doubt it.
