U-Verse Hits Austin
Taking orders, November 19 installs...
by Karl Bode Thursday 08-Nov-2007 tags: dsl · coverage · business · AT&T U-Verse · AT&T DSL Service
AT&T has announced that the telco has launched their IPTV & VDSL U-Verse service in parts of the Austin, Texas area. A leaked internal launch schedule obtained by Broadband Reports had the Austin launch slated for November 19 -- but the press release notes they're taking orders now for installs that will begin on the 19th. The service will be made available first in limited portions of Austin, Pflugerville, and Round Rock.

Additional detail on DVR rentals, their channel lineup and AT&T's qualification tool are available at the U-Verse website. As always, your questions about the service can be answered by the helpful folks in our U-Verse forum. Also, take a look at our U-Verse users availability map. The pricing again, in case you've been napping:

Gimme what I want...

Once they come to my neighborhood (the wiring is done), I will ask them for DSL only. If they insist I go for a bundle, I'll simply tell them to call me when they change their minds.

Re: Gimme what I want...

I agree. I'll bundle Internet with VoIP or Wireless (cell) but I don't want Uverse TV - yet.
They came to my door, and I asked for Internet only. The only way they would sell it standalone (according to them) was to cancel service, and they would attempt to offer Uverse Internet only.

Re: Gimme what I want...

Cancel Uverse (TV+Internet) then they would allow you to keep Uverse Internet only. I haven't tried this, so I don't know if it really works.

Wasn't this discussed before, and users reported the trick was just to order the bundle, and later cancel all but the DSL?

I'm still trying to figure out what AT&T is smoking. Verizon rolls Fios into town, and is thus offering a faster, better product for less. UVerse comes to town, and they are offering a single line HD feed (both Cable and Sat companies have 2 now), a buggy DVR (even the DTV branded DVR is working right), and mostly the same internet speeds. (I have 6000/768 now)

So whats the point of switching?

This is AT&T country. There is no Verizon Fios options here. I wish they were.

AT&T must be starting on the outskirts of town. No Uverse option for me.

Re: Gimme what I want...

Right, sorry if I wasn't clear. I was just pointing out that when Fios comes to town, it comes with a better and cheaper product, which is a pretty good reason to switch from whatever you are currently using.

But when UVerse comes to town, it's just a more complicated and less feature rich version of what you already have. Where is the upside to switching, other than just for the sake of having the new thing?

Re: Gimme what I want...

I have a friend in Milwaukee who got Uverse. She hasn't said anything positive or negative about it but I can say that they messed her internet connection up with their own installed router.

Just having Uverse available might mean more specials from time warner which is exactly what I am concerned about. Roadrunner has treated me well over the years.

I'm in Austin and have been pleased with Roadrunner. So I read thru this hoping for fiber or something exciting, but the only advantage would be 1M up instead of 0.5. That's not worth changing for.

It's especially not worth it since I've heard they insist on installing a bunch of junkware on the subscriber's PC. TW just gets the modem hooked up and leaves your PC alone if you prefer.

What's wrong with calling a 6/1 plan elite? As far as I know, here in Austin the only other option is Roadrunner, and their 7/512 package is $30 bundle with cable, and their 10/1 option is $40 bundled with cable. So for $30 I'd rather get dedicated 6/1 line, than a shared 7/512 line.

They market it like it's blazing fast, and well, it's not. Cable co's have been doing 5/2 service for a while now and nobody calls that elite. I suppose they are just fishing for people that don't know any better but to call something elite means it's the absolute best of everything (or damn close).

Given how many people here at DSLR gripe about the US being so low on the totem pole I'm actually shocked to see some positive defense for my comment. The marketing gets old though and they should just stick with good, better and best. At least that would resemble what it is.

If we let it go and compare things, then I guess I can call my 30/5 FiOS GODLIKE! Maybe Verizon should update their marketing.

Elite Bundle a good deal

•U400: 300 channels, 49 premium channels
•Elite: 6Mbps/1Mbps
•U400:$129

300 channels and 6/1 mbps for $129 is a great deal. A lot cheaper than my Comcast price.

Re: Elite Bundle a good deal

your kidding right...man this country has too much disposable income.
My Comcrap is 90 channels of crap and roughly 7mbps speeds.
This costs with taxes $110. after taxes that 129 will go to $160. This is 250 channels of QVCs,Judge shows, and enough man bashing channels like Lifetime, Oxygen, and TLC to make the rest of us get divorced.
This also marks the Deathstars beginning to the end of cheap dsl.
And heres an argument for you; for those of you whom do not think this is a utility, are you willing to give up your easement for a VRAD for someone elses "luxury" or "privalege"?

I need some oxygen....Oprah here i come.

Re: Elite Bundle a good deal

The bigger picture is smaller incremental revenues that they rely on by telling the masses that this is something that they can't live without. This is a collaborative effort between data providers, cell services, cable entertainment etc. etc..
5 years ago, would you have thought a $129 + tax "cable" bill was a good value?
Add in your telephone service and cell service, your looking at 3 to 4k a year(depending on your services.

That 3 or 4k would make how many mortgage payments?

Cedar Park Rant

My old address in Cedar Park ( DSL ) is showing as available ( the VRAD's were only installed 1 1/2 years ago ) and yet my new address which is FTTP is not showing as available.

Of course I wouldn't buy it anyways since DirecTV fricking KILLS U-Verse without any comparison. I'd like to get rid of ATM/PPPoE and get a faster spead but of course AT&T sucks there too.... they won't sell faster and they won't sell without TV.

Re: Cedar Park Rant

Correct, U-Verse is straight IP. My point is ( believe it or not ) my current FTTP connection *IS* based on ATM/PPPoE because it ties into the same legacy DSL backbone.

By switching from FTTP/DSL HSI to FTTP/UVERSE HSI ( or whatever the heck AT&T calls their garbage ) I'd be getting a true 6MB download instead of 5MB download.

Still it's all garbage because I should be able to get WAY more then that ala FiOS since I'm on FTTP.

Re: Cedar Park Rant

FWIW... AT&T SE is migrating away from ATM. they sent letter's out to some users that their PPPoA wouldn't work after a certain date. If you're on FTTP it's a pretty good chance you may not be on ATM at all.

Not sure how SBC does it.

Re: Cedar Park Rant

Don't I wish. Here in SBC/TX the FTTP is still PPPoE and our IP's come out of the same netblock as the DSL customers.

When I do speedtests I see 5MB down just like when I had DSL `Elite`. The uploads are better since it's 1MB up instead of 768 UP but again I only see 80K not the full 6/1 that U-Verse users see.

Can Cancell TV--Keep Internet

U-Verse began serving parts of Oakland, CA this summer. I ordered the whole package (under a 60-day trial) and, after about a month, was able to cancel the TV portion and keep the Internet portion (paying the full rate for internet rather than the bundled rate). I did the cancellation in early September, but they still haven't sent me instructions for sending back the TV box and cables.

Why limited rollout?

I've seen VRAD's installed all over the Oak Hill/Circle C area for MANY months and I check a couple numbers there, not available. Why the limited rollout, system still not robust enough to handle a load?

I want to hear from U-Verse Customers!

This Bundled Product sounds good for the present, but Technology is way beyond this point. For the Average Person this is great, but this Product is max'ed out on average settings. Like someone said, AT&T is rolling out an obsolete Product. I would like to hear from U-Verse Customers. How good is this Product?

Why U-Verse?

It would appear, looking at the throughput, that it's very similar to DSL. So why not just get DSL?

The only differences I see are these:

If you have FTTP, which isn't everyone. Perhaps that means one could get 6.0M when they could have only gotten 1.5M before? I really don't know. I wish someone can enlighten me.

The upload is slightly higher, but sans servers and RDP/VNC I don't see a point in caring about upload. So I'd care about upload more than the great majority of people who don't run servers and/or RDP/VNC.

TV? Give me a break. Firstly, I'm one of those odd people who don't watch TV, and thus I don't want to pay for it. Second, I think it's a little odd to get TV through the telco. If I wanted TV I'd use cable or satellite, or just use rabbit ears. Running everything through a single pipe is just a bad idea anyway, especially with "best effort" and "up to."

What they should do is that where there is FTTP, they should offer a 10/2 Internet-only option. I bet a lot of people would be all over that.
